Installing Main Bearing Seals
With out a special tool how would one put in the main bearing block seals ? Seems as how I saw on here where Josh or some other inventive soul just used some cotton thread or such and just kept packing it in solid untill full and trimmed flush with the block.---BUD

Fill upper tray with one quart of oil and make sure the butterfly is on the tube that drains the rear main in the lower pan. The cotton thread does not replace the bearing seal. It goes in the 1/4 inch holes on each side of the caps the holes are drilled half in the cap and half in the block. Seals go in the bearing cap and in the block over the shaft. You do get the seals in the full gasket sets dont remember if packing comes with gasket set or not.0 -

There are no main bearing seals in a splasher engine. I have covered this topic in the W.T.N. Thee is a slinger flange on the crank, and deflector drains behind this to channel the oil back to the sump.

Geoff, My boo boo I was thinking of the stepdown sixes on the seal.0 -
Lot's of people confuse the main bearing packings, and the main bearing seals. Plus, like Billy, the differences between the Step-down and Jet motors, and the earlier spalshers. All engines have packings, and front timing case seals, and the latter is the same seal from '32 through to 56. Only Step downs have rear main seals. '55-56 and Jets have a neoprene type, others have a graphite rope type. I understand that there is a Chrysler Neoprene type seal can be used in '48-'54 sixes. These are superior , and easier to fit than the rope type IMHO. I'm unsure, but I also understand that the Jet seal is the same as the '55-'56 Hash motors. Can anyone confirm this?

When I got my jet back in the late 80s the rear main was leaking bad. I bought a nos seal from a vender and it was hardened and weather wore. Leaked some but not as bad. Later heard that some of the chrysler seals would work. Looked through the stock at my friends parts store and found one the right shaft size but it had a little rubber strip on each end of one of the two pieces. Cut the strips off and installed in the Jet. Still holding after 20 years. It was victor # that I have written down some where. Will try to find the #.0

on the 308 hornet engine I used a rear main seal from a 318 dodge fit
