I appreciate the shape the wagon is in, but that is one ugly car.
  • Hmmm, badge engineering didn't work then either.

Yup, that's my truck. Was a fun meet though I felt a little out of place being a little early on the AMC family, but the flyer also said Hudson's. I ended up with three trophys there, 2nd place AMC cars, Best Paint and if you can believe this Best of Show! I was very honored as it was the driver who voted.

After the show many of us drove down to Irwindale Speedway and drove around the track in front of the crowd before the races. A few of the guys layed down some nice burnouts.

VicTor, thanks for posting the link to the pictures.

Here is another link to pictures of that show.

I guess the comment to each his own is a good one here. I think this is a great looking car. A local friend had one that he needed to do some restoration on and ended up selling it to a gentleman in California. Saw the photo's of the car finished (Black and Red) and it was great. Real sorry I let that one get away....:):):)
  • Cars like the wagon kinda grow on me now days - the Hudson PU. sure is great looking in orange paint !!

I Also Have A 56 Hudson Rambler Wagon With Wood Grain. Sure Is An Ugly Car But Fun To Drive And Gets Tons Of Attention Where Ever It Goes.
  • I think everyone has his own idea of "ugly". Just human nature, I suppose. I had my 1950 Commodore 8 sedan at a car show a couple of years ago, when a guy came up, looked the car all over inside and out, and commented how really nice the car was. I was soaking up the compliment when he added, "But it's about the ugliest thing I have ever seen!" That took my pride down a notch or too! Last year another fellow told me he had seen a Hudson pickup at a car show but didn't know Hudson had made such a thing. After commenting on the beautiful restoration of the truck, he had to remark that the pickup itself was as ugly as Hudson could have made it. It is hard for me to believe that there are people who think our wonderful Hudsons are ugly. I guess if GM, Ford and Mopar products are the yardstick, then Hudsons really can be considered ugly! My suggestion to folks: don't measure other cars by the Big Three yardstick.

This Hudson belongs to a California Inland Chapter member. As nice as the picture of this Hudson is it does not do it justice. You must see it in person to see how emaculate the prep and paint was performed. Especially when told none of the trim was removed. You could not see any sign of paint on the trim or paint buildup between the trim and body. I would love to see that pu. Maybe mine will look as nice one day. I don't know how many times I've been told a Hudson pu is an ugly truck, as well as other Hudson models, but I like them. My pu is in sad shape at the present and could even be call ugly, but I like it. It bothers me to hear cruel comments about someones car. Such comments only discourages restoration efforts which we as a Hudson club are trying to promote. I guess this goes back to what my Father taught me as a youngster, "if you do not have something good to say, be quiet". Thanks for the pictures SoCalCarCulture. Lee

Thanks for the comments all about my truck, been having fun driving it and getting comments and thumbs up.

I was looking at the wagon closely and it is a very nice paint job, very well done. And I was impressed also about the trim not being removed.

Lee, where are you located? And do you have any pictures of your truck you wish to share with us here?

:rolleyes:That '56 Hudson Rambler Station Wagon is not a bad looking car. It is different, sure, b ut it is not a tri five chevy. I am sure it get a lot of attention. Lances pick up is also a pleasure to see. The big three have done badge engineering for years and look where it got them. can you imagine a crew on the assembly line saying, "what are we building today" and some one looks in a box a plastic name tags and replies," yesterday we built chevy cavaliers, today our name badges are for pontiac sunbirds, ao we will glue them on and the person who wants the pontiac over the chevy will pay a few hundred dollars more for the same car that we built yesterday.

In the early seventies, chevy brought out the Vega, a real lemon, but it sold fairly well. Seldom see one around anymore. Other car companies have nmade mistakes also.

I am positive that if GM had built the AMC Pacer, they would be unable to keep up with the demand. If AMC had built the Vega, they would have had to close the doors a lot sooner.

The '56 belongs to Ed Burton of Claremont, CA. Each to his own, of course, but I think it's a great car...:D

Like or dislike the looks of a car . . . . that's just one more fascinating aspect of what makes our car hobby go 'round.

Frankly, I always thought this model of Rambler was much more advanced (style-wise) than the competition. If you put a '56 Ford or Chevy next to it, and showed it to a novice, I'll bet they'd guess that the Rambler was newer. It would be another two years until Chevy put the headlights down into the grille. Admittedly the two tone colors and garish sweeps on the side, scream out "DATED!" but taken as a whole, this was a pretty clean styling excercise. Remember too, that this wagon was also available as a hardtop, which, I believe, was a 'first'.

And really, even the garish colors and side sweeps pale in comparison to some of the bizarre styling coming out of the Big Three in the late 50's. Maybe this is one reason why Rambler moved steadily upward to third place in sales by 1960.
