splitting a hood

hi there, any one have an idea how i can remove the hood sides from the hood tops on my 37 t-plane coupe. i removed hood and soaked pin then hammered the hinge pin in the direction of the cowl, towards windshield. is this correct way?? this pin, she no a move. and i am going to chip more paint if i do not stop. HELP. does hood need to be in a certain position ?, laying flat ?, top side down?. should i find a hood that is e.g. no paint but straight. rough shape ? i think this thing will look 50-60, ish with just the top hood installed. there is only a small vortex from the side view between the fender being so big and round and the top on. just see the top of the motor, looks good. thanks to photoshop and a friend to show me how to install and/or remove body panels and view it, thanks in advance for tricks/tried it-did it comments. rainy here next 24-48 hours so i finnally got some down time to my self, locked in the garge with the blues cranked up. dermott:confused:

I haven't had to do this myself (yet . . .), but I have bookmarked http://www.classiccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9917&highlight=terraplane+hood cause it discusses how to do this on a '34. Maybe it'll give ya some ideas . . .

  • thank you, just what i needed. now i need weeks to soak it. guess she {my coupe} is going topless this summer, lol. keep an umbrella handy in case it rains, but my windshield rubber is cracked and shrunk. leaks a little and my wipers move slower than new england sap in winter. does this ever stop !, lol. hope not. whats a hood worth ? top or top and sides do not care about paint??? postage/handleing must kill cause i wrestled this hood off myself and she wanted to fight, not easy to move, lol. thanks , dermott.

I was the one with the 34 hood pins that I needed to remove. I used the PB Blaster, making sure I was in a well ventilated area, and soaked it for a couple of days. I then took a drive pin and taped the pin until it moved an inch or so and sprayed it with blaster again. Two days later, I used the

10" drive pin to knock the pin out of the first hing. I then took a piece of rod the same diameter of the hing pin that I bought at the local hardware store and used it to knock the rusty pin out. Make sure you lubricate the rod your driving with so you don't get it stuck! Clean the inside of your hinges well before you insert any new hinge pin. Good luck and be patient!

Very interesting thread. I was lucky with my 36T bonnet - no problems. I have bought some stainless steel rods to put back. Re the chrome strip on the 36T, Ive been told to use Mack Truck Parts Ref 4QM12P5 from ‘B’ Model trucks.

Last year I went to check the motor oil in the 37T, lifted the bonnet up and it all slid over onto the other side fender. You may have heard me in the USA when it happened ####. Someone had replaced the captive bolt with a hex headed bolt and nut, and with vibration the nut had come off. I put back a square headed bolt with a nyloc nut. Regards, Barry

Ya know, thinking about this a little bit - I wonder if it would be easier to pull the pin out with a slide hammer instead of using a punch/rod to push it out?

I think a slide hammer is an excellent idea, providing you can get enough "bite" on the end of the rod.
