53 super wasp wont idle
I need some help,I could not get my car to idle right so I bought a kit and ever so gently took the carb, Carter WGD 776S apart, cleaned everything good.the low speed tubes/jets were completely stopped up and the metering rods had a little pitting on the tips. After assembling with new parts, accelerator pump, gaskets and several choice words trying to get that accelerator check ball retainer clip back in,I put it back on and fired her up.She wont idle ,runs fine about off idle but sounds like it runs out of gas at low idle.It has good fuel pressure and i checked for vaccum leaks at intake, carb base, vaccum pump, vacuum advance. Can the wear on the metering rods cause this or do I need to look elsewhere. Any expertise on the subject would be greatly appreciated .I want to drive it! J.R.

Sounds like a possible vacuum leak due to warped carb base or throttle shaft bore wear. Also, the idle circuit could be clogged.0

There are two coppery or aluminum looking plugs near the idle adjustment screws. Right behind those plugs are the idle and transfer holes that feed air/fuel mixture into the throttle bore at idle and low speed. They are pressed in and easily removable. The best thing is that they can be put right back in and re-seated with some gentle taps after a good cleaning.
I've had the same trouble, sometimes reversed with a good idle and no off-idle fuel. The problem was an accumulation of rust, scale, general crap that had settled behind those plugs and obstructed the tiny ports into the throttle bore. The cast iron base is bad to rust and drop scale in there that is semi-loose and causes all kinds of low speed mayhem.
The other cause could be a blocked idle screw air bleed. Its easy to overlook those tiny holes that seem to serve no function - but actually do.
