1936 Bumper Bolts

Silly me, I thought that it would be easy to find the bumper bolts that are oblong shaped rather than round in a 7/16 chrome bolt. I have called several antique car vendors today and they do not seem to be available. Does anyone have a source for these? Did Hudson start using the "bolt" for the crank hole cover in the bumper as early as 36?

Brownie, are you speaking of the small oblong bumper bolts (3/4" to 1" high) or are you speaking of the humongous oblong bolt that covers the crank hole in the bumper? In answer to your question, I think Hudson started using them at least 1936, maybe earlier. I salvaged a '36 bumper from a Terraplane that was literally rotting into the ground, several years ago, and its crank-hole cover bolt is now on the bumper of my '37 Terraplane. I think it might actually be a stainless steel skin wrapped over an oblong-head steel bolt.

    Bill, Jon,

Thanks for the quick reply. I am looking for the twelve bumper bolts that I need to bolt my bumper onto my car. I understand that they were as you define Jon, 7/16 inch bolts with the square sholder and head that is about

1 1/5 inch long by 1/2 inch high.

While I was replating my bumper I considered filling in the crank hole cover. I decided that I like it there because most people understand what it is for even with the grill cover in place. I noticed the bumper cover on Mike Cherry's 38 last week and I am not totally sold on if I like the look or not.

Yes, I found the package in the garage, Bob Drake in Grants Pass, OR. Bumper Bolt oval 1933-41, part# 40-17758. This is a Ford reproduction place. A lot of repro Ford stuff is the same as Hudson. They bought from the same after market suppliers. I get all kinds of stuff from C & G Ford here in Escondido, CA.

Here's a photo but it doesn't give the front view. The Hudson ones had relatively "sharp" ends top and bottom, while I have purchased repro's that are more 'squared off" in the past. I'd be curious if these are really the same as Hudson's. Maybe someone can send in a photo when they buy them.

I had several kind folks contact me so early today I ordered a dozen from Dennis Carpenter auto Parts. These are ford parts and I got a much better price on them than 4 for $60.00. I shoud have them early next week and I will take a photo and send it in to add to the post. They are on page 90 of the Carpenter parts book. I got them for $8.00 a bolt and right after I ordered I got an email that someone had them for $5.50 a bolt. I guess I could save a bit of money if I had a bit more patience?:confused:
