Whats a good gas tank sending unit float replacement?

Anyone replaced the sending unit float on their 36T? Mine wasnt reading very well so I dropped the tank and pulled out the sending unit and surprise the float weighed about a pound! Almost full of gas. Guess it served well up to now.:)

Anyone got numbers or a lead on a replacement? Maybe a generic (or Ferd) part?

Thanks again!

You can get an exact match from a Ford place, like C&G Ford in Escondido, they are online. Or if you have one nearby, go there.
  • Here is a web site for early ford 6 volt sending unit. BOTH Companies sell them for 40 bucks each.

Dennis Carpenter also sells early Ford 6 volt sending units for 40.00 which will also work some bending of arm required for both.

  • If your unit still works but the float has a hole in it and is full of gas. you can also but just the float for 5 bucks. From either of the above companies.

    Great job team!

And yes Boozer, that is exactly my problem. So a new float it is!

    Thank you all,

Or if you're an inveterate do-it-yourselfer, the floats are pretty easy to solder up. Removal of gas first is recommended. ;)

Naw not me! Dont like things going boom, or even poof, in my face! HA HA

Went out to Hagen's in Puyallup and got one today. Then went out to Sandy at Olsons gaskets and he made me a great new gasket for the sending unit and pickup tube. Put it all in and 'VOILA' all better and no leaks!

    Thanks!

  • Any Ford dealership should be able to get the float, I just bought one for my '48 Packard when I put the tank back in it, and I used a Hudson sending unit too, it was the only one I had that was good and fit. Had to modify the float arm though... The float cost me about $7.
