This is a pic of the 53 that was on E-bay a week or two ago, Does anyone know who makes this AC kit? Obviously aftermarket, but it seems to fit under the Stepdown dash quite well. Perhaps paint it dash color and chrome the vents and it would look good.

Can't answer your question about that dash unit, but here's what I did on our sedan (see pic). I think it looks better, 'cause it looks as though it "could've" been factory, i.e., it matches the knob housings on either side of the steering column. I plan on doing the same thing with the convertible, although I don't like the plastic vents, so will probably make some from aluminum. The panel you see was made out of stainless steel by me, but I'm trying to get bentmetal here on the forum to make my next one . . . possibly steel, then chrome-plated. Perhaps if he had some extra interest, he could make up several all at one time.

    Dave,

It kind of looks like the Vintage Air unit I installed in my '49. It's a one-piece 'evaporator/fan/controls' that I was able to fit in and also maintain the stock heater. It's called the 'Slimline Underdash' unit. I bought it with the optional wide belt pulley, and also bought the mounting bracket that they offered for the compressor. It looks like the newest version they're offering has been improved by moving the left most vent closer to the driver. Here's their website, and also some pic's from my installation, for what it's worth.

  • Thanks guys!
  • Very interesting floor shifter... looks to be an automatic (Hydra?) transmission. One pedal showing.

I think the ad said that it had a Chevy 700R4 trans in it.
