Starting an engine on a stand?

How do I go about testing a Hudson motor while it is mounted to a stand? Do any of you have pictures or a diagram of what needs to be hooked up to get it running? I have a 308 of unknown condition I would like to "check out". I believe it will run but I don't want to put it in my car to find out I was wrong.
Thanks

Maybe my method is crude, but I placed the engine on a flat cement floor
and used blocks under the engine mounts Then I put up a radiator and wired it so it would not contact the fan. Then I got an old exhaust sytem and fitted that on the floor to get the fumes outside.
Fuel can and a line , battery and some jumper cables.
This all worked well enough to get the engine running and adjust the valves before intallation in the car. Just use care in doing all this.0 -
A battery--ignition coil--fuel supply PUT WATER IN IT , of course block off hose connections for short run with out the water pump working , or you can use a spare radiator and fan for longer run time. Hook up a mechanical heat gauge so you know if you need to shut it down . The fan can be 110 volt blowing thru radiator OPEN THE GARAGE DOOR---Bud0

I guess I should have said that the only wires on the motor are the spark plug/coil/distrib. there is also a ground strap and starter wire. What do I hook the battery to? Do I need voltage regulator, starter relay, etc..... pictures?0

Have you seen this thread?

Take a look at the engine run-in stand silverone made, might be a little too elaborate just to "test" the engine you have, but would come in handy if you plan on re-building in the future. I plan on making one here in the next few months. Park Waldrop also made a nice run-in stand, might be pictured in the same thread as above.0 -

OK , does not have to be on a stand, just so it is blocked up solid, but remember the torque effect when giveing it the gas , if on floor best to bolt it to a long 2x4 at 90 degrees of the engine at the front mounts . Lets use the posative ground system as all Hudsons. hook a jumper cable from the pos bat terminal to anywhere it will stay on the engine or that ground strap .Hook a small wire from the neg bat to the coil . I assume the coil to dist wire is there. you can use another 10 gauge wire from the bat neg to the the starter [ momentary to run starter ] Use a spare radiator if you have one, does not have to be real close to engine and you can blow air thru it with a 110 volt fan. PUT A MECHANICLE TEMP GAUGE where the temp sending unit is . . No radiator ? block hose openings and fill with water , keep an eye on the temp gauge and unhook the pos bat cable to shut it down . No you won't need any relays, regs or stuff like that for a test run . Remember the pos bat cable is your shut down , unhooking it shuts everything off . OH YEAH you might want to drop a hose in a can of gas to the fuel pump just in case this thing might decide to run !! Bad fuel pump may need replaced or use electric fuel pump .---Bud0
