What does this have to do with Hudson?
  • Nothing you cannot turn in a car over 25 years old and the car has to have been insured for a number of consecutive years so you cannot turn in that junker in your back yard.
  • OH, Darn, I was hoping to pull all the hulks in the county otta the back yards and turn them in for "a Check"! Isn't this just like the I'll buy you a house check scheme??????

Guess I am too cranky to appreciate the "specialness" of this bill.

Just to show you how much the recent deaths of MJ and FF have affected me, I opened this thread thinking that a Hudsonite with the nickname "Clunker Bill" had died.

That's funny, and a little sad, too. It's amazing how the press can affect our lives in so many negative ways. That's probably why I don't watch the news anymore. Seems that 99% of what get's reported is who died, who killed who, how everyone is wronged, how terrible the economy is, how the government is screwing up or screwing the public. In all honesty, that same 99% of the time, it doesn't have anything to do with me or my life or is even going to affect me, nor do I have any control over it. I'd still rather be where I am than living in say, Iran.

Final form of law is not written yet- agency has 30 days from 24 June to do so. As usual, much bureaucratic detail is to be added. Dealers must be registered, payment is direct from gov't to dealer, payment is not to affect any other rebates etc. (you bet!), car is to be scrapped, that is shredded or crushed... then they will get into the fine print. Dealer can sell salvagable parts except for block and drive train... then propose to allow the drive train to be split-up and trans and rear end sold separately, and under some conditions the block. Present language says program will have someone evaluate for future value as a collector car, and allow those to suvive (Hah!). Dealer to get $50.00 per car for processing. Also supposed to give seller the salvage value of the car.

But may help some. e.g. I have a '93 Lincoln town car with three bad windows, and no air (leak somewhere). Has 73,000 miles, and runs like a tiger. Dealer won't give $600.00 for it on trade. NADA avg trade is listed as $2,700 (of which $912 is due to low mileage. So $3,500 would be a good deal. Hate the thought of scrapping something like this, though, as interior is excellent... Walt-LA
