WTN & Jack Miller

In the most recent WTN there is a nice summary of the history of the publication. One of the reasons I bought a Hudson and joined the HET Club was the WTN and Jack Miller. In 1985 I was looking for an old car to buy and restore. My choice at the time was a '57 or '58 Studebaker Golden Hawk, but too many rusty junkers for the money. I considered a '58 Corvette rolling chassis, too much money at the time for what it needed (hey it would have been cheap by today's standards. I still kick myself on that one). A friend at work pointed out a '50 Hudson, low mileage for sale in Southern NJ advertised in the Philly Inquirer. I called and got a description, one owner, 35,000 miles, not run in about 20 years......, price negotiable. Anyway, there was no internet in those days so I got an old car magazine and found information on the HET Club. I called the number listed and Jack Miller answered. I told him I was thinking about buying a Hudson and what could he tell me about the mark and the club. He told me a few things but said "why don't I just send you some of the back issues of the club magazine and see what you think". Well in a few days 2 or 3 issues of the WTN arrived at my house, first class mail, no charge. I read all of them from cover to cover and thought that this is pretty cool. I bought the '50 which took me far longer to get it back on the road than I anticipated but it finally got there.

As noted in the history article, I was disappointed when Jack quit editing the WTN. The quality suffered greatly and I drifted away for some time and almost quit the club (I have two '64 Studebaker Hawks from that drifting). However, the latest WTN has restored my interest, but I must admit I think a "From the Archives" section would be a great idea. I still use my old issues for reference for things I need to fix or need more information about. George Schmidt, Bernie Seigfried, and many others that have now passed on wrote some great articles back then and I think a lot of new club members could greatly benefit from them if they were republished. Hey why not a bound set of the "Best Of the WTN" articles that could be sold in the company store to raise a few bucks???

Ok enough said.

  • Dan you'er spot on... Bernie as you know was a fine fellow ready to help anyone new or old to Hudsons. His knowledge of the Hudson mechanics is without equal. Your generous sharing of his correspondence to you is enshired... is the an appropriate description? ... as a PDF scan on my website. Bernie was a guest in my home on several occassions. A gentleman to the end... he called me with answers to several questions just weeks before his death as he could no longer write responses to the questions we all had about our Hudson. Hopefully he will be remembered at the 100 year National. :)

What a great idea "From the archives" would be, I hope someone takes this idea forward.

I often get out old issues [ from the 70's through to the present] just to read and wish we had access to some of those cars here in Aus.
