Can you believe this can happen to me?

I was putting my gage package into the dash of the 36 Hudson Eight, English Custom being very careful to be sure that it fit like a glove (Dr.'s glove that is) and it was all going along with not a hitch. I had all four bolts secured that holds it into the wooden dash and I was tightening them down. 4 turns? No it was going easy so I decided on six. Six turns all snug and I turn the dash over and the glass broke. Starts right even with the top of the gas gage and goes in about an inch then down to the bottom of the gage. Let me see, is this the time that I say those words that mom would wash my mouth out with soap 50 years ago? DRAT!!!! ALAS, I need a new glass. Any chance anyone out there would have one?

  • Palmolive was'nt too bad but man that ole yellowish stuff she used to wash clothes would sure make a preachers kid out of you !! Hey Brownie, try useing some rubber washers next time . Bud
  • Brownie, I believe it. I put beautiful new glass taillight lenses in my '40. Then removed the trim so I could put a new bulb in one. The glass lens stuck to the gasket for about two seconds... then broke in a million pieces on the floor.

I feel your pain, Brownie. If I didn't have BAD luck, I wouldn't have ANY luck.

These instrument clusters turn up from time to time on Ebay and at Hudson meets, so I wouldn't fret too much. If you need something quickly, consider contacting a plastics supply house and getting a piece of clear 1/16" Plexiglas and use that temporarily. You can fashion a template out of thin cardboard to establish "fit", then cut the acrylic to fit it. I am assuming that the plated bezel will pull the flat acrylic into a curve against the body of the instrument panel. If not, you might try heating the acrylic in an oven (until it becomes slightly pliable, then you might hold it against the curved dashboard to take the correct shape when it cools. You will of course want to use gloves and a piece of thin insulating material (like whatever passes for asbestos nowadays) to protect your dashboard paint or woodgraining). Or you may find a thinner acrylic. Very thin acrylic takes on terrific strength when curved so you can go pretty thin. Just remember to use a special Plexiglas cleaner when cleaning your new lens because if you use Windex and a paper towel the darned thing will scratch!

PS -- you might also try Scott Young, 332 Devon Dr., San Rafael, CA 94903, (415) 472-5126 to see if by any chance he makes the glass. He makes and prints other Hudson instrument glass lenses.

Thanks Jon, I contacted Scott Young and he did not have a 36. He had a 37 that was rectanglar, but that will not work. I did notice one on ebay but it is a bit older and does not have the oil or temp gage with the speedo. I will keep checking and perhaps by the time I am ready to roll I will have found what I need. Thanks again....
