212 question

The answer to this might be way obvious:D, but here goes...

I've got an opportunity to pick up a 212 engine, supposed to be complete and ready-to-install, that is coming from a '47 Super Six four-door that a local guy is putting a SBC in (the 212 is "too slow" for him!). He has the three-speed and the bellhousing, too. I have not seen this engine yet. It would be nice to have a spare engine for the '37 stashed away. Is the '47 212 the same as the '37 212? If they are different, how so?

Thanks in advance.

The main difference is the placement of the distributor on top of the cylinder head, at the rear, driven off the back of the cmashaft. Otherwise there are no differences in dimensions.

You would have to "massage" the firewall to make the distributor clear the firewall.

Hudson sold replacement 212 engines that were of the later style, with the distributor in the rear, for installation in earlier cars, and included with those engines, to be installed by dealers, a piece of sheet metal that was recessed.

The dealers were to cut out a part of the firewall, and replace it with the recessed part, to accomodate the distributor.

Several people in the club have early cars with that modification done, probably by dealers back in the day.
  • Thanks for the info, gentlemen!
