There have been a few threads recently on mascots. Thought these photos might be of interest. Not sure how acurate they are, or where I found them a few years ago. Regards, Barry

  • Barry, I don't know about this book in pre war but I know for certain that in post war they got a few years and mascots wrongly identified. Also it's not just Hudson that is mis identified.

Hudzilla, Glad you had a comment. I was starting to think that the mascot on my 1936 Hudson Eight was from a 35 Terraplane.

The winged bird is '35 Terraplane, and the winged carrot is '36.

Winged bird . . . . winged carrot. Winged bird . . . . winged carrot. If I only had those two descriptions to pick for my car, it would be a no-brainer.

    Geoff,

I believe the winged bird in the oval is '34 Hudson, that is, if it has two wings. Perhaps the second wing just doesn't show up in the picture. I have the winged bird on the complete mount without the oval which I know to be '35 Terraplane. Also, the standard model '36 Terraplane's "carrot" had no wing, just the two bands that hold it on to the mount, whilst (like that...? LOL) the '36 Deluxe Terraplane carrot had a single wing. The '36 Hudsons sported the dual wings. My original '36 Hudson from a few years back had the two wings. All of these differences were explained to me several years ago by a Hudnut who knows the cars to their most minute details!

You are correct of course - the Terraplanes had a single wing and no oval, and the Hudsons had two wings for 1935, and the differences you note between the "Super" Terraplane and the H8. Hudson , along with other car makers, had funny ways of naming their car models. For instance, the bog standard Terraplanes were called "De-Luxe", and the up-market version (which should of course have been the De Luxe model, were called Supers. And the "El-cheapo" version for 1935 was called the "Special".

Like Holden in Australia, called their plain ordinary cheaap model the "Holden Special". Sort of takes away the meaning of the word doesn't it?
