Just wonder if anyone know this . I am up to put my engine together after a total rebuild i have a 52 hudson hornet with a 56 308 engine . One guy in USA told me that he drill one more hole in the front bering cap just betwen in the other side of the cap he say that he does that for take the high presser out of the timing gear cover so it not be any leak of the seal on the cover, is that common that you guy do that over there. I am from Sweden hope you will understand what i wrote and i hope that i got some answer before i drill one more hole.

  • Kelly Heingardner (i hope I spelled that right) instructed me that you can drill the extra hole in the front main cap to prevent oil from building up and leaking from the front cover seal.

I did do this on my 308 when I rebuilt it. It did leak before but not now.

there is not much room for the oil to drain back into the pan in this area so it

backs up, allowing the weight of the oil to seap past the crank seal.

He did instruct me in a few other items that may be benificial to you:

The main oil galley runs from the front of the block to the rear and feeds the lifters, cam bearings & main bearings. the ends of this galley has pressed in

plugs in it. I drilled these a little oversized and installed shallow pipe plugs

into them. Be careful that these plugs are not installed too deep or you

can block the front and rear main bearing passages. These plugs also need

to be flush with the block, both front and rear so they do not interfeer with

the rear block plate or any timing gear components.

I also installed a .050" shim between the oil pump pressure piston and the

spring to increase oil pressure some. it was about a 10lb gain when I did

    this.

hope this helps you as its helped my engine stay together and be leak

free for four years and she gets flogged quite often with the supercharger

    on it.
