40 Super 6 Exhaust Manifold
Got my new car and man it is a good looking car.
It has an exhaust leak. Four of the six exhaust manifold studs are broken off below the surface.
Can I take off the exhaust manifold just by removing those six bolts? Do I have to also take off the intake manifold, or are there any other bolts or hardware that I need to remove?
Thanks
Scot

The intake manifold is bolted to the exhaust manifold, so I would remove both manifolds. I would take this opportunity to replace all manifold studs, possibly face the exhaust manifold gasket face if reqd, check the freeze plugs that are normally not accessable with the manifolds on. You might like to consider cleaning the manifold and having it painted. Check previous threads re painting and removing broken studs. You might like to consider getting the proffessionals to remove the studs. Good luck, Barry0

There's a valve in the manifold on mine, that routes exhaust differently for warm-up. I has a cover with two studs on it. You might want to free that up while the manifold is off. Mine leaked exhaust.
I have a '40 Super Six also. The car sounds fantastic with new exhaust all the way back.0 -
"Amen" to Barry's suggestions to do all those additional things when you have the manifold removed (new studs, plane the gasket surface, etc.). As you work on your car you will remove certain components and discover a whole lot more (beneath the surface) that will eventually need repair. Your inclination may be simply to fix the matter at hand, and then leave the rest for another day. However, it is almost guaranteed that whatever you don't fix the first time, will go bad before long. Then you'll have to go BACK and repeat the whole removal process yet again, to fix THAT portion. With an old car (as with so many things) it is really advisable to take the opportunity -- once you have delved deep into the car's innards -- to make everything right, so you don't have to come back again.
Then you can proceed on your restoration with confidence, knowing that you won't have to come back to the previous problem for years or even decades to come. With an approach like this comes a growing confidence in your machine; a secure feeling, as you drive down the road, that you'll actually make it home! Be pro-active and take care of things before they have a chance to break. Whoever said, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" never ventured out in an antique car.0 -

They also never owned an MGTD. I used to own a '52. The saying was "if it ain't broke, it soon will be"
Thanks for the in put,
Ordered a kit with all of the manifold gaskets and also ordered some studs and nuts so going to follow your suggestions. Might have to also order the freeze plugs. Will know more in a day or two how deep I have to go.
Going to try removing the broken studs myself first and see how far I get. The very back one is going to be the most challenging.

Okay, started to remove the intake manifold. When I loosened the nuts holding the manifold coolant started coming out. I drained the coolant system and am going to now remove the manifold. Before I do I wanted to check. Does coolant flow through the intake manifold? If it does not should I be checking something?
Thanks
