54 wasp linkages

Hi everyone,

I recently changed my 54 wasp from a standard 3 speed to a hydromatic. I used a 53 super wasp for a donor car and thought everything would change over. BUT I have a couple of small issues:

1. The lever that operates the throttle linkage at the bottom of the gas pedal seems to be a little bit shorter than it should be so I either have a smooth shifting car and no wide open throttle or the other way around. Does anyone have a gas pedal assembly from a 54 wasp with hydromatic transmission that they would be willing to part with?

2. The twin H linkage I fashioned together from a 54 hornet but It's not really correct. Does anyone have a picture of a twin h linkage setup from a 54 wasp especially with an automatic that I could use for a reference?

3. Is there such a thing as proper fitting air cleaners for a short wheel base car with twin H?

thanks in advance for your interest and replies.

If I remember right, the throttle linkage is indeed a different length from std. to Hyrdo. If you can't locate one, you can always cut and weld in a new piece to the rod.
  • SWB linkage is hard to find, especially twin H, with a hydro, that might be the hardest. figure how many SWB cars came with a hydramatic, and twin H, at some point, the buyer would have just opted for a hornet.

the linkage that bolts to the head on a SWB is different, I think even further, this might be different for an automatic car as well. the rest of the linkage is SWB and automatic specific. If the donor car was a 53 SWB automatic, that part of the linkage should work, unless there was a difference for 54.
  • The piece that seems to be the most problem is the actual lever attached to the bottom of the gas pedal. It seems to be too short and does not give me enough travel to both give me full throttle and move the throttle rod to the tranny enough. I could take mine out and modify it but it would be nice to know how much to add via a measurement rather than making guesses.
  • Jim... The throttle linkage and the TVI linkage to the transmission require very specific adjustment. These adjustments can be found in the Hudson Hydramatic manual. I would suggest you try these adjustments first before linkage changes. My suggestion is based on you using linkage from a SW hydamatic installation.

    Good Luck
  • Therin lies the problem Ken...how do I do a proper adjustment when I don't have the proper linkage?.... seems like a catch 22 situation.

According to the parts book, the pedal to bellcrank rod is different between 1952 - 1953 Pacemaker/Wasp/Super Wasp and 1954 Wasp/Super Wasp. In 1954 this rod also different between hydromatic and Borg-Warner equipped cars.
  • thanks Mars.....I don't suppose it says what the difference is?

It does not say what the difference is. However, this part is not twin H specific. So you can use the part from any '54 SWB car with hydromatic.
