'27 Esssex Boattail Transmission removal
I have a 27 Boattail that we are starting a restoration on and short of wacking the transmission with a bigger hammer I thought I would ask you all the proper way to remove it from the engine. The driveshaft has been removed and the 4 bolts which hold the trans to the block are as well. The problem is that the trans moves back about a half inch +/- and then stops. It feels like it's catching on something. We have played with the cluch, it's not frozen, and nothing. The engine turns freely as does the trans, both when engaged and disengaged. Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance

You will have to undo the bolts holding the clutch assembly together, and part the pressure plate from he flywheel. Make sure you mark the relative positions with a punch so that you re-assemble it in the original position to maintain the factory balancing. The pilot bearing is bolted on to the front of the spigot, and won't come through the centre of the plate. To make it easier for future removals you don't have to bolt this bearing in, it can just a s conventienently sit in the crankshaft recess and happily do it's job without being fixed in position.

I knew the hammer thing wasn't going to work..... thanks for the info Geoff, marked the flywheel, remove the 10 or so bolts and it's out. What an interesting setup they used - nothing like a Model A. I'll post a few pics in a bit.
