Need 36 Terraplane door handle
I had a problem at the chrome shop with my passenger side door handle. They can't get the door lock to say in after it has been chromed. I have sent them two old handles I had, but they were to corroded internally to be of any use.
Does anyone have a 34,35,36 handel with a lock that they would sell?
Thanks,
Scott

Scott, I may actually have what you need. My problem was that my lock set was broken and could not be re-installed after I had my one locking door handle re-chromed (passenger side.) So I have been collecting parts of these ever since. I got two at the National, as soon as I figure out what will work for my door handle, I will be happy to pass the other parts on to you. The locksmith here in Escondido got so sick of me hanging around with various pieces of door handle that he practically banned me from his shop.0

Richard,
Thank you for the offer. I don't know what they could have broken when they took the lock apart at the chrome shop, but the lock just comes out with the key. They had a lock smith remove the lock prior to chroming, but something went bad.
I have sent him two other handles but I guess they were to corroded internally to be of any use. I have not had one apart myself, so I'm not sure what the problem is. What ever locks the tumbler in the handel must be worn. Maybe the handel itself is worn.
I would be glad to return any unused parts.

Scott,
These things are really difficult to get apart if you are not a locksmith, which I am not. When my locksmith went to put mine back together after it was chromed he noticed that half of the upper lip on the lockset was gone, which he said redered it useless. I took another one apart by myself, because the stainless decorative piece was cracked and I wanted to replace it, which I couldn't do and the locksmith refused to screw around with it because I had taken it apart. At this point I have lots of extra parts. Unfortunately, the '36T is unique to '36T's, even the Hudson handles are different!!0 -
Scott,
The lock cylinders are easy to remove by inserting a stiff wire in the notch of
the cylinder and pushing down on the lock plate at the base of the cylinder.
Then rotate the cylinder ccw with the key and it will come out. All 3 of my
cylinders were bad because the part of the ridge at the bottom of the cylinder
had broken off. I had to rebuild the ridge using what I call hard solder. It's
working so far but I push in on the cylinder when I turn the key to keep from
wearing down that ridge.

Thanks Howard,
It seems to be a common problem with 36 door locks. I don't know what is harder to find, door locks or glove box door springs.
I'm still looking at pictures of your beautiful truck. Maybe I will get mine finished up this winter.
I wonder if they used that lock in any other years.0 -
Scott,
Like so many other things '36, it is unique. Other lock sets are either too long or too short or they are missing the little cover that closes over the key hole. Believe me. I must 5 or 6 very good Hudson lock sets that don't work in the Terraplane door handle. Oh yes, the Hudson for the same year is a different style, I have a couple of those also!!0
