Hello,
Im looking for a 4 door stepdown hudson project in the Wisconsin area and surrounding states. Im currently a VW enthusiast but am looking for a more family type sedan thats reliable and Automatic so the wife can drive it too. Im looking more for a resto rod type with modern drivetrain and i dont want to hack an original.
I have a lead on a 48 Super 6 within the surrounding area. I am looking for some friendly advise and starting points so I can tell a Dud of a project. things like common rusted areas thats fine vs scrap, common broken items easy to replace, or missing items impossible to find. Any red flags you can for-warn me about and any relavent important questions to ask. I am familiar VWs and American iron is a whole new ballgame for me.
Info thats 48-53 stepdown specific is greatly appreciated. Also anyone that has one or a lead on a Hudson for sale is also appreciated.
thanks for your help
Brad

Hello Brad,
Stepdowns are "monobilt" or unibody constructed so rust can be a real problem
There are several threads that discuss the issues on this forum - here's the link to one.

Another resource to look at is my website http://www.49c8.com
I give a pretty throrough discussion about my 49, what it looked like when I got it and how much rust issues I've had to deal with.
There's also tons of pictures under the "Restoration" section on my website that show the main areas of concern.
In the end, any car can be resurected - check out this link to the Jet Convertible prototype that was recently completed.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!0 -
thanks for the links. any other good links or reading material suggestions are appreciated. Ive been browsing the forum here and im getting a better feel for the cars and common modifications. Great little website on rebuilding your 49. I commend your effort in taking the time to record, photograph and post your restoration progress. thats not easy and very time consuming to do - thats gonna be one fun ride.0

I think the big deal to look for is the frame rust. Although people here like Chaz and Rambo to just name a few, have fixed rusted out frames without getting a doner car. Your better off avoiding a car with excesive rust, look below the front of the front door, behind the rocker. Also the perimeter frame in the rear of the car. Like Rambo said, it can all be fixed but you should be able to find a car without that problem.
Here is a post of such a repair of the frame. http://www.classiccar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15725&highlight=worth+saving It can be done, but it would be so much better to start off with a car without this problem.:)0 -
I have a 50 commadore six sedan for sale. Six cylinder 3 speed runs great nice chrome and stainless. Frame is very solid.0
