My Motor's Auto Repair Manual for 36-37 212 says "40 foot pounds". My Hudson Mechanical Procedure Manual (1942 to 1947) say "40-45 foot pounds using an accurate torque wrench. Tighten each nut a little at a time in the sequence shown in Fig. 102 until all are up to specified tightness".

    Have a good day. Lee
  • Thanks LEE, That's what I would have guessed but wanted the real facts . The Hudson manual I have { 34--37 } just says tighten them down evenly and gives a pattern , which for anything is start in the middle and work outward in a circle . BUD

Bud, if you have a copy of Walt's Garage Hudson Tech Tips there are two articles with tips on preperation and procedure for torqueing heads. They are on pages 17 and 46. Or you can see them in WTN Nov/Dec 1997 and a more up to date procedure in WTN May/June 2003.

If you do not have Walts books, Vol 1 and Vol 2, I highly recommend that you do. There is a wealth of information in them and they are well worth the money.

Walt recommends remove all gasket material from head and block and clean with brake clean. Then hang gasket by wire and spray light coat of Engine Enamel, Aluminum. "let set for ten minutes and spray another light coat. Don'spray a heavy coat that will run. Here you must let the gasket set at least 12 hours before you are ready to install it."

He suggests replacing any rusty or damaged bolts with stainless bolts with hardend washers under the bolt heads.

"Always install the gasket with the name up, or where the lip around the cylinder bends over. to install your bolts, ...first coat all threads with NEVER-SEEZ and put a little under the bolt heads . This way your torque wrench will not be fooled by any drag."

"Do the torquing in steps with at least 15 minutes between. On splashers do 30 then 40 and then 45. ...Use a torque wrench that you can set the scale and clicks at that torque. Run your engine until it reaches full temp. then shut it down and let it set till the next day and set your torque wrench to the last setting and run through the torquing again. You will be surprised, some will turn before the wrench clicks." Quotes from Walts book, Walt's Garage Hudson Tech Tips.

  • Hudson Nube here. "Walt's Garage Hudson Tech Tips" volumes 1 and 2. As in Walter & Dawn Norem? This sounds like must reading as I begin my learning on my '40 Super 6.

Where can I get copies, from the HET club store?

Walt Mordenti, very knowlegable, wrote and sells "Walt's Garage Hudson Tech Tips". He is in the club registry. His email <<mmordenti@aol.com>>. I believe he lives not to far from you in San Francisco. I have both copies and they are well worth the money. You will not regret the investment. I don't remember the cost but I believe around what 2 or 3 magazines would cost off the news stands would be close.

Another important source of information is the "Mechanical Procedures Manual'. I believe you can get that from the club store. It is a copy of the original repair manual, a must have if you plan on doing any of your own work on the car.

A third source is Alex Burr's "GENERAL INFORMATION HANDBOOK"

Hope you will share some information about your 40 Super 6. I hope you can make it to the All California Meet at San Simeon, Sept 17-19. Walt will be there.

    Have a good day. Lee

    Super7-

If you are in the SF area, I highly reccommend giving Walt a call and plan on a visit to see him. Walt's got 75 years of experience working on Hudsons and has probably more info to pass on about your '40 than you might ever want to know. If nothing else, his two-volume book set is worth it's weight in gold. I make it a point to visit with Walt every time I get the chance, and I'm half the country away from CA. I stay in touch with him via e-mail on a near-weekly basis.
  • Thanks for the advice. Not wanting to hijack this too much more.
