NASCAR Hall of Fame votes needed
Hey Guys,
Jack Petty, one of the kansas members-an ex race car driver came to our most recent chapter meet with a request.
He has created a replica of Tim Flock's race car and is a big supporter of his, anyway The NASCAR Hall of Fame is inaugruating 25 racer into their Hall of Fame. It would be really nice to get Tim Flock into one of those positions...the higher up the better! I have already voted and hope you all might go to www.nascar.com/promos/hof/ and put your votes in.
Thanks everybody.
Hudsonly,
Lisa G.

Among the non-Hudson people are such greats as Red Byron (NASCAR's first Modified champion (and its first champion in any division) in 1948 and its first Strictly Stock (predecessor to Sprint Cup) champion in 1949), Junior Johnson, Lee and Richard Petty, Curtis Turner and Ray Parks. Ray who?????
Ray Parks, you could say, was slightly ahead of Bill France in getting stock car racing off the ground. He was an Atlanta bootlegger, business man, race team owner (perhaps the first - with Red Byron as his driver and Red Vogt as his mechanic. (Red Vogt preceeded the legendary Smoky Yunick - Smoky learned his craft from Red Vogt.) Red Vogt was a wizard, in all its meanings, with the flat head Ford V-8.
The Atlanta connection is detailed in the book "Driving With The Devil" by Neal Thompson, that I've mentioned on here before. Ray Parks floated Bill France several loans in the early days that kept France's dream and NASCAR alive - but that part of the NASCAR legend is barely known, as France did his damndest to bury the moonshine/bootlegger connection to stock car racing - he wanted to present a clean, family type atmosphere.
And, yes, Hudson was a part of the early days - from running shine to running races.
