Will be putting A/C in my '54 Hornet this spring, and was wondering what the best approach to tinting the windows is ? Thanks, Bob

Something to think about: Don't know what CA laws are for tinting windows, how dark (especially on the front seat windows), etc. . . . but you need to educate yourself the legal limits for CA. Here in TX, there is no limit to how dark you go, but when I moved to VA from TX with the cars we had here, I almost immediately got a ticket for having too dark of windows. Or whether or not it would even apply to your 56-year-old vehicle.

That was recommendation #1, #2 is, have it professionally done. I haven't seen an amateur job yet that lasted very long, i.e., bubbles in sheeting, peeling off, poorly done edges. I'm sure quality amateur jobs are out there, but I haven't seen it yet.

If you are in Southern CA, I think it's a great idea, especially if you have AC installed. Besides, it looks cool.
  • I have had tinting done. Although it seems easy unless you are experienced I would have a professional do it. Generally it is not that expensive.

If you have a relationship with a reputable new car dealer see who they use. Generally they will have someone in mind. There are some new products on the market made by 3M which are fantastic at reflecting light and are not based on tint darkness.

Look for people who custom cut each piece instead of getting precut pieces. Hope you find someone and tell us who (and post some pictures).

I've only owned 1 car that had the dark tinted side/rear windows - other than factory style tinting - I hated  driving that car when the sun went down - horrible visibility, hard to see headlights..yada, yada, yada...

My crew cab dually for instance has factory tinted glass...a darker tint on the rear cab glass and rear door windows, the front door/windows have tint but not as dark, about the same on the windsheild - no issues driving at night.

If you want the Hudson factory glass tinted, a reputable shop that knows how to apply the vinyl film is the way to go.

If you're into replacing the glass you can get the replacement glass with the green tint which is more than enough IMHO.

Hudson did do some factory tinting but obviously not as dark as a modern window black tint. more of a greenish bluish tint. I saw a set a club member had. Suppose if you're out in the SW or something tho it's something that would help.
  • Walmart sells a removable tint. I use it on my semi. In the summer it helps cool the interior, and I take it off in the winter, to allow light in for warmth. You could put it on while you drive, and take it off for shows.

That's a good idea, right there.
  • Thanks everybody for the suggestions...We'll see how it goes. I suppose anything would be an improvement....See you around-Bob
