254 crankshaft swap
I have a 254 from a 49 that needs the crank relieved to mate to my Hydro. I have been offered a 51 crankshaft to replace the 49. My question: Is this a straight swap, or does the poured bearing suface require any particular "matching" of the crank to the existing bearing surfaces? In a shell bearing engine, I'd simply surface the crank and replace all of the bearings, I'm not sure what is to be done on a babbit engine. Procedures, advice, comments are welcome. Somebody out there knows about the 8's and has the right answers. Thanks
Joe

Only thing you can do here is measure the journals of the respective cranks, and see if they are the same. If not, you have an expensive job ahead of you. YOu may be able to get a replacement set of bearings, but these are pretty scarce these days, and the usual procedure is to re-metal the existing shells, and line bore.
