Gas pedal Repair

I will probably have to find a good one, but does anyone know how to repair the small knob on the back of the gas pedal for a 52 thru 54 Hydra-matic. If there is a possible repair.

The throttle rod slips out of the knob when you press the gas pedal to the floor to kick down a gear. Some one had attempted a repair in the past which I thought would work or I would have started looking for a pedal sooner. I saw a couple on ebay but left them go by.

I would either: turn a new "knob" on the lathe and weld it on your existing rod, or find another rod. Then again, are you sure it's the knob that's bad?

Pat, I think I might have an extra if you need it, let me know. Hydramatic, right?
  • Seeing Russell's reply and re-reading my original post I realized I was not quite clear on what I needed. I need to repair the gas pedal not the throttle rod. The rubber socket/button is not holding the metal knob on the throttle rod. The rubber socket has an old repair or a wire wrapped around it to try and make it hold the metal knob. It works until you go clear to the floor to have the trans kick down then the metal knob pops out.

I was told K-gap has a new button that glues to the gas pedal, but I do not remember seeing one in their catalog. I was hoping someone may have done a tempory repair that worked for a while.

Yeah, you're right, I misunderstood you. My fault, actually.

Maybe someone can reference this better but I think there are a few different styles of stepdown gas pedals. I was looking at a spare for my 54 at a swap meet years ago, next to me was Bill Albright, I asked him if this would fit a 54, he said nope and made reference to the hole/knob on the back of the pedal.

Someone knows more than I do about this.
  • Fixing a Stepdown accelerator pedal throttle rod pocket can be a daunting task, but it can be done in a manner that will assure proper pedal operation without incessant rod disconnects. The pocket into which the throttle rod should fit is made of vulcanized rubber which over 50+ years dries and cracks.

Replacement of this socket can be accomplished in your garage workshop. One method is to replace the existing socket with a replacement clip fashioned from a piece of metal. To complete a repair you will have to remove the accelerator pedal and prepare it for this repair. The first task is to clean off the existing pedal socket from the back of the pedal. A wire brush on a grinder is one method to remove the existing socket remnants.

This repair is based on the use of a shop created custom metal "C" clip. The C Clip is fashioned from metal which will be attached to the accelerator pedal with welds or bolts. The completed clip should include a “C” at the end which will slip around the throttle rod shaft below the ball on the end of the shaft. When the clip is fastened to the pedal the clip will hold the throttle rod ball against the back of the accelerator pedal.

    Good Luck

Thanks. I have a lead on one and if that doesn't work out your repair looks like a permanent fix. KGap in their catalog shows the outside cover for the pedal. But not the socket.
