Responses to Engine Running HOT and a Question

Let me respond to your comments in order.
1. I will make sure the thermostat is 160 degrees. Are they marked or do I have to test it with a thermometer in hot water??
2. Walt, how do I restrict the by-pass flow?
3. I put 18 quarts of coolant into the radiator so the cooling system has to be full.
4. The right side panel went missing in the R and R of the engine so that may be part of the problem.
5. The water jacket is NOS with the proper sized holes—small to large--front to back.
Question--The car was running between the second and third marks on the gauge before the rebuild and according to Walt Mordenti that is between 160 and 180 degrees. The only thing that is different is the missing panel on the right side of the radiator---could that missing side panel make that much difference in operating temperature??
