Mike LaJoice's Dad is working on a '39 Hudson coupe at MetalMeet 2009 which is in progress right now. I don't know if it is a restoration or not but it's good to see a work in progress. You can see it in a live cam at this website.

  • Thanks Chaz!

    That is pretty neat. :)

Looks like they are making the trunk lid much smaller.

Where is that taking place, what city? Do they have that event very often? Looks interesting to me, wish we lived closer. Thanks, Bob

    Bob,
This is the International MetalMeet that takes place once a year in Oblong Illinois. It last about 10 days and is normally held in the mid to latter part of October. People come from all over. What you are seeing is about 1/4 of the buildings that house projects, vendors and seminars. I think there are some people from the Netherlands over here this year. In 2007 when I was there, I met people from all over the U.S., Sweden and Argentina.
There are smaller metal shaping get togethers around the country during the year.
    Check out these two sites:

This looks like a fun way to try my hand at some of those tools!

    Sarah,
I feel obligated to give you fair warning!
Metal Shaping is HIGHLY addictive. There is NO KNOWN CURE for it.

    Some of the symptoms are:
    1. Eyes glazing over at the sight of fresh metal that hasn't been touched.
    2. Everything looks like a potential project in metal.
    3. You go dumpster diving for "perfectly good" sheet metal.
    4. You purchase more and more tools for the job.
    5. You Make more and more tools for the job.
    6. Purchasing and making tools then becomes an addiction.
    7. You can justify all of them with no guilt.

    Peace,
    Chaz

Do you know the dates this year? Maybe next year? Thanks, Bob

    Bob,
The web cam is a live feed. It is in progress right now. It's the 13th thru the 20th of October. Usually the last day is clean up and packing up to leave.
It is normally held in the month of October in Oblong. They will not give a date for next year for a while so I'll just have to wait until they post it.
Go to www.metalmeet.com and check out the "EVENTS" for a list of past events in other places. There may be a Meet near you.

I just checked the live cam and there are still a lot of people still working at 10:46 P.M. this evening. They have placed the trunk back on the Hudson. Looks like progress!
    Peace,

Hello everyone. I am Mike LaJoice, my father Mike LaJoice is working on my trunk lid at the Metal Meet. We are building a 1939 Hudson 112 Coupe. THe completed project will be a mild rod. This is the third year my father has been working on some steel in Oblong. The first year was the fenders, second fender skirts and now the trunk lid. The exterior and interior will be stock, the drivetrain modern. I will be documenting more of the build at www.hudsonandrod.blogspot.com.

    Thanks for the interest.

    Gee Mike,
How embarrasing! I don't know! Take another look at the car. I was assuming it was your Dad's car. Is it really a Hudson or maybe a Plymouth? Either way quite a few Hudson people got introduced to MetalMeet and got to see what they could potentially do for themselves. I wonder if I had met your Dad since I was there in 2007. We were at the far end of the concrete block building Just past Dave the Wave and Bill Brackett and his awsome metal flowers.
    Heve your Dad PM me!

The coupe at the Metal Meet looks like a plymouth and it looks like there were multiple trunk lid jobs going on. You can see some pics of him on the metal meet forum. He ended up finishing the trunk lid with lead. Thats his first lead job.

He was there in 2007. He had the fenders there at that time.

  • Here are some pics of the Project dad worked on at the Metal Meet.
