Fabric Match? 1952 Hudson Hornet (blue)

Can anyone share a picture of original 1952 blue Hudson Hornet interior fabric? I have received a sample of what is suppose to be a matching modern replacement, but my original seems to be so faded I am having a hard time figuring out if it is really close or not.

I said a few more words about it on my Blog. http://52hornet.blogspot.com/

  • Micheal,

There is a fellow in the New England chapter who has a beautiful all original example of a 1952 Hudson Hornet in ebony black with a blue interior. The interior of his car is in absolute pristine original condition. Probably the best original example that I have seen. I'll give him a call tomorrow and see if I can go over and take some reference pictures for you. The fabric sample that you have is a close match to the pattern but not the colors. Though I think that if you did the interior in that fabric, it would look super.

    Michael-

Do a search here on the forum for "fabric", or "original fabric". There has been many threads regarding this. I personally have not gone through this yet, but to my recollection, this sample is about as close as you are going to get. No one makes an "exact" copy of the original, but SMS comes about the closest.

You should contact Silverone (Ryan Ankney) here on the forum or look him up in the Roster (he's in Canada). He is a stickler for originality and has visited those SMS folks on a number of occasions about duplicating the original perfectly. He will have some more insight on your plight. Tell him I referred you. He and I have done business together on numerous occasions and has been helpful with parts and info for my 'vert.

That would be fantastic. You can post them here, but please also send high resolution pictures to my e-mail (HETmjsandbe@gmail.com remove the HET) Thanks.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have to ask, look where for 85-86 Chevrolet Cavalier fabric?

Just took this of my 52 Hornet rear seat armrest. I drove it this afternoon too.

Probably in this isle at SMS, Michael. :)

Note the tag on one of the rolls in the upper left hand corner.
  • It is my understanding that leather seats were also an option on 52 Hornets. What did that look like? Was it all leather, leather and fabric, leather and vinyl, ...?

It was all leather. The seats were the same pattern as thos with fabric only the fabric was replaced with two inch pleats. I have only seen them in red and on coupes and convertibles.
  • Thank you for satisfying my curosity. I wanted to give leather a little thought before I did anything on the interior. I am pretty sure I am going to move forward with replacing the fabric and vinyl with as close a match as I can get after carefully removing the existing fabrics to be stored for future reference. All leather just does not do it for me.

Leather was an option on closed-roof cars, so you would not be out of the realm of originality, although I am yet to see an original leather interior in a non-convertible Hudson step-down. Have seen a couple retro-fitted, and look really handsome, especially with a leather headliner. That treatment looks especially good on the HLWYD's, with the chrome strips across the width of the roof.
  • Are there any color references for the leather? Nicole is interested in all leather, but I have a feeling the cost would be sky high, and I do not know how to color match something I do not have a reference for.

Instead of leather you could consider Ultraleather a man made product. Most upholsterers have this product in various grades (price). Generally cheaper than leather (although some high end ultra's can be more expensive). Nice product that performs better than leather IMHO.

Michael - Quoting from "Car Distribution Dept.", Bulletin #DL-52-4: "Option Letter AA-1, Brown & Gray Leather Trim; Option Letter AA-2, Blue & Gray Leather Trim; and Option Letter AA-3, Maroon & Gray Leather Trim.

I'm sorry I cannot provide you with pictures of what each of these option would have looked like installed in the cars. I'm assuming the "bolster" or upper part of the seat, and the seat frame (back of front seat) would have been the brown, blue or maroon, and the part of the seat that normally has the fabric would have been the gray - the headliner would most likely have been gray.

Maybe someone with personal knowledge of these leather interiors will jump in here and clear this up of us.

    Uncle Josh;

Is that the factory original fabric or newer replacement?

The interior is original. I believe the black bottom has been painted once, and the Boston Creme top is original. I did the top end of the motor. New guides, ground valves, new rings as 5 of the original top chrome rings were broken.

Looks great, Uncle Josh. . . . wouldn't happen to have a pic of the interior, would you?
