Funny Story!

So, last month I purchased a 52 4dr hornet, just for the twin-h. It was a complete wreck, hadn't had plates since 1969, and on its way to being cut up for its perfect frame rails to use on my pacemaker, We removed all the trim to use at a later date. So yesterday as I was milling around the shop, I decided to throw my old manifold on her and connect a battery. After some very creative wiring and a couple checks here on the forum and my trusty manual, she fired up and ran. My father and I were beside ourselves, after sitting for that long this thing cranked right up. Another testament to the Hudson engineers, or maybe the hudson gods. so Lauren named her La Paloma Oxidado ( the rusty dove) So we hit it with two DA's and the random orbit, then a coat of rust bullet as a test for my sailboat and two coats of primer, some more sanding and filling and priming to come. the old girl doesn't look too bad.

  • Wow, looks like you have to keep her now. Looks/runs too good to strip for parts.
  • yea. I finally found one with good rails at the right price, and now nobody in the shop will let me cut the car up, well i guess the search continues. this will be a fun parts runner for the shop
  • I of course would have expected that car to survive.

It had the rare optional storm door for the passenger side.

    (complete with dog entrance):)
  • you should see the rare optional tow package with floor shifter!!!
  • When my son and I went out to take a look at the "other Hudsons" the shifter made me think of a trigger mechanism for a Tank cannon! Good on you for getting the ole girl to run. For the record the frame rails in your car are easily replaced with bent sheet metal and a bit of torch work.

    Good Luck

I love stories like that....when some car everyone had counted out and given up on fires right up can comes back to life.
  • I'll post some pics of the shifter tomorrow. it's really something... to say the least.

Cool story. I'd like to see the shifter, maybe I'll make one like it :)

Cool story. Heard similar stories about getting a Hudson fired up after it had been sitting for decades. It's nevertheless amazing every time I hear of another one. Gotta love those Hudsons!!

Glad you're saving her, keep the pictures coming.

I hope you have pulled and cleaned the oil pan out.....
  • I hadn't pulled the pan, I never thought this thing was gonna turn over, but thats the very next thing on the list.

Check the SN. Looks like a 53 to me.
  • for sure a 52, that hood ornament was changed at one time or another.
  • Here's the "rusty dove" wearing a guide coat of black primer.

Grille says 1953. So do the parking light housings. And the front bumper.

Maybe someone hung a '53 front clip on your '52...

Not impossible - probably the case.

One of the stranger looking exchanges is bolting a '54 front clip to a '53!! ('53-1/2???) Gives you a split windshield '54. :D If I remember right, the late Art Adams had one of those. I remember seeing it a Carl Weber meets back a few years ago.

Yeah, the solid windshield with mid-stepdown stuff sure makes a pretty face. Don't remember what's under the hood. One of the guys posted it in a street rod thread a couple months ago. Can't seem to track down the post.

Yes the last time I saw it this summer at the Friday nite Sonic cruise it was Hudson powered.
