I was just digging through some papers I haven't seen in 25 years or so. I found a "Swaps Manual" Copyright 1976 by Louis Backhus, jr. of San Francisco. Most of the interchangeables on the lists are collector cars now. Not much value but very interesting. The first page has a very faded cartoon that won't scan..darn it.. The cartoon is Broom-Hilda by R.Myers. Irwin is walking away saying "Gaylord, I'm going to order a new car". Gaylord asks "What kind?". Irwin replys "A Hudson". Gaylord exclaims "They haven't made a Hudson in nineteen years". Irwin retorts........................................................"That's Ok I'm not in a hurry".

Needs to be up dated to 39 years

Thought you all might enjoy a chuckle. :p

Maybe we need some public-spirited Hudson citizen (hereafter called the "PSHC") to start a webpage listing current interchanges. As each of us discovers yet another interchange we could send that piece of info. to the PSHC and he/she could update the page every week or two with the new additions. The PSHC would list the name of the contributor of each new factoid, so that the angry mobs with their torches and clubs would know on whose home to descend, should that expensive 1967 Massey-Furguson thermostat not fit our 1922 Essex. Thus, putting together the list would be a team effort and not so daunting a task for the PSHC.

(I'd volunteer but I already maintain a Hudson Repro Parts List at http://mysite.verizon.net/detailed1/Repro%20Table.htm )
  • Jon, sounds like a great idea!

  • Jon:

As far as Stepdown Hudsons go ... the PSHC folks on the net are Dave Sollen, Alex Burr and myself. While none of us is into catalog fromate... if the Stepdown owners look carefully they will find modern interchanges. Some of the information maybe dated, but that is not the point of posting that information. It is as starting point, a real number that equates to the item being sought. If the seeker collects these part numbers in a note book and walks a major swap meet these parts can be found cheaply. If the seeker is not inclinded to swap crawl...then online auctions and marque specific websites will produce many of the parts that wear in a Stepdown Hudson. For instance... I have the parts break down for a T86 Borg Warner Trans with the R10 overdrive. The part numbers are ALL available via the INTERNET. So, just because your first pass at the local auto parts place does not produce the desired results, does not mean the information is OLD STALE or unusable...just look in more Fertile places.

Good Luck to those who want these interchanges on line ... all three pages have an offer to post known usable modern interchanges and sources.
  • Just to get off the subject a little bit. Is Lou Bachus still around? Some of those swaps probably came from me. Lou was a great guy, seems to me if I remember right he had a black Hornet, I don't know what year. If anybody's got a line on him, please post. Thanks.
  • Lou passed on to the Great HUDSON after life quite a few years ago. He gave credits in the Swaps manual to all who provided him information. The manual can be found on my website.
  • Thanks Ken, maybe I was reminiscing a bit too much. I was originally indoctrinated into Hudsons in 1971 with the likes of Lou, Phil Roskie, Pete Welzbacker, Bill Albright, Pete Booz, Gary Klahan (sp?), Harry Jones, Andy Dunlap and others in Reno, NV and on the west coast. Since then, I have been in haitus from 1982 to 2004, other than getting a 1952 Hornet from Bill in 1998 to put on the "back burner" whenever I got around to it. I got that car because my first Hudson was a 1952 Commodore 6 sedan and I loved that car. The next car I got completed was a 1952 Wasp Hollywood. Times, they have changed. Now you see why the username "backtohudsons". Thanks, I'm glad that Lou's work still exists today. I remember him coming up to Reno cussing that black Hornet all the way because it kept overheating up Donner Pass. We got him fixed and back on his way safely to the San Francisco area.
  • LI recently purchased Lous 53 conv that he had when he passed, about 12 years ago. I hot lit from his brother who has guarded it ever since. a great car, bill albright
