Power steering conversion???

Hi, I have a 1956 Hudson Hornet Custom, 308ci 6 cyl with No power steering. What would it take to install stock power steering components for this car, if at all possible. Also, a list of parts needed would be helpful along with contacts for purchasing these parts. Thank you.

Well your going to need a power steering pump, cylinder,2hoses, the correct bracket for a hornet 308 engine a new piman arm the one that the power steering cyl. Hooks to and the bracket that goes on the other end of the cyl. That bolts to the frame all of the steering stuff may be different also i'm not sure about that
  • Thanks Paul, it's a start.

You'll need to check with the Nash folks as to the chassis stuff- which year and model Nashes will interchange for those parts. The stepdown Hudson chassis parts are completely different, of course.

I didn't make myself clear. The pump and its mounting stuff will need to be Hudson (unless he wants to adapt something else). But the chassis (steering box and arms, etc.) need to be Nash (or 55-57 Hudson). I just didn't want him to find a '53 Hornet parts car and think all the parts would go on his '56, as the cars themselves are completely different, as you know.

What's wrong with the "Armstrong" type of power steering?? By far the easiest to fit & use & almost indestructable!!
  • how about power steering for a 49 super six?

If anyone can post some pictures of these parts, I may have them in my newly acquired tonnage. I did find a few pumps with mounting brackets and a couple of rams in the last load.......so there may be more stuff stashed in the boxes

Love your sense of humor, Dave!

I'm happy to report that your Hudson came from the factory with Armstrong power steering as standard equipment. For the younger among us, Armstrong is a reference to no power steering at all- just your strong arms.
  • Yes ....came from the same company that made the 4-60 A/C system used by Hudson in the Stepdown cars.
