gluing rubber to running boards

Hi all, have glue my rubber matting material to running boards but as soon as I go into the sun it all starts to move
Matting material was from K-Gap
Glue used by my guy was urethane
I would be interested in other thoughts, its not too bad to remove as the sun has done most of the work for me LOL
I do have the kick plates in the middle of the running boards which would stop movement could this be part of the problem ?
Thanks
Mike

I put K-Gap repro rubber on my passenger's side running board about 15 years ago and used contact cement at Press Kale's recommendation. This particular mat (1940) requires pasting rubber pieces on to the rubber base, too. It's still on there. :rolleyes:0

hi Sam, this is a 1 piece mat, i wounder if that makes a difference? i have some high temp contact at work, my installer didnt think it would expand that much, I suppose it being black doesnt help much

We used contact adhesive (Ados F2) on the 28 E Coupe 10 years ago & it's never lifted. It's a one peice mat.0

I never tried this on a running board, but I had very good luck with a glue called "Pitcrews Choice". I used it to glue some heavy rubber trim on my VW Jetta door and it was the only thing that would last. It dries flexible and almost clear. Available at most auto parts stores.0

I also used contact cement, per Press Kale's recommendation on my '36T and the mats are on real good, never moved. His method is to use wax paper in strips and to remove them as you work your way down the mat. It worked great!!0

Thanks Guys will give it a go, as I said lucky most of this has let go
will let you know in a couple weeks

The secret is to let it sit in the sun for at least an hour before you glue it on.
Same as fitting a fabric top. Fit it cold, it's got to expand when it gets hot. hence the wirnkles.0 -
Contact cement will work fine... but you may want to try 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive # 08011.
It can be used like a contact cement and comes in a tube. I use this stuff to glue emblems, molding, etc. You can spread it on strategically and press the rubber in place. While they recommend the contact cement approach (spread on both parts let dry until tacky then assemble) it will work when assembled wet. Put some weight on it, let it dry and drive on... With the plate step in place and this adhesive you shouldn't have any problems... unless of course you're running at the Salt Flats trying to break a record!
There are several types of 3m windshield adhesives that contain methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) that I personally don't recommend... Why? MEK plays havoc on finishes especially fresh paint --- acts like paint remover.

Just a note about the contact cement when you put the rubber to the steel you only get 1 shot i always use paint stirrers i put them about 3 to 4 inches apart between the mat and the running board then get the mat where i want it them working from the center i pull out the sticks and rolling down the mat with a j roller it works fine and it just where i wanted it at0

After installing new mats on my 29 Victoria, I had this problem.
After several cycles of sun and garage and some time the problem went away.
The back side of the mats should be scuffed with a scotchbrite pad or steel wool so they are not smooth and glossy. I used rubber moulding glue on both running board and on the rubber mat surfaces.
Also put some tool boxes or books on mat to compress them.0 -
Thanks Guys
for all the help0 -
I was talking to Doug Wildrick today and he told me there was a guy in Canada that puts the rubber on the old school way dose any one know how to contact him thanks.0

Started removing running board material today and have found that ti was only glued on the edges and that the centre was just floating there no wounder I was getting bubbles, I suppose the good thing is it will make the job easy to repair, I would have thought they wouuld have glued the whole lot

The guy in Canada is www.runningboardrubber.com I've been told he is expensive but does very good work.0

Expensive isn't the word, for those running boards but I must admit very tasty I have just glued it all down today I will wait a day or 2 then put the old girl out into the sun, its looking good, I used prep-sol on everything to clean off all the old stuff (I think he used cavity wax in the center to hold everything down till the sun hit it and set the wax back off again) as the prep sol washed it off very easily, I scuffed the shiny side off the rubber as suggested and glued it down with hi temp contact glue (Adios) making sure both sides could be touched without sticking to your hands, otherwise when the contact carry's on drying it entraps gases and the bubbles then form
1 more thing done
I thank everyone for there help
Mike
