  • Harry: The first time I saw a stepdown with this paint scheme was dark blue top and dove grey bottom on a 51 C8 sedan my Dad brought home in the late 50s. Since that time quite a few cars with a variety of color combinations have been seen in this scheme. The last I drove was a 51 C6 coupe again dark blue over dove grey.

    Cheers from chilly HOT.

At some point in 50 they went to this style two tone. It is correct for 51. 50 had this style plus the 48-49 style. the roof only came about with the roof trim on the 51 hollywoods and 52 for the rest of the body styles.
  • I like the 2 tone paint ... it breaks up the lines a little ...

My 52 was painted this combination but then there was stainless that covered everything from the window base to the top. I repainted it that way. We are doing a 49 and this is the way we will go with it. Texas tan and cream like the one for sale here on the Forum.

A Dixie Chapter member has an original '51 coupe with these same two-tone colors and design.

In 1951, my dad had a 51 Hornet 4dr painted with similar colors as the Hollywood, in the picture. However, the colors were reversed, cream on top.

Yes, factory offered the tu-tone as shown on the reference car. As Nick points out the roof only tu-tone paint started with cars that had stainless steel placed on the roof lines.

The two tone as shown on the '51 Hornet sedan began mid year in 1950 on all models including Pacemaker - all of which did not have a stainless steel molding to separate the colors. These moldings did not come into use until the 1952 model year!

  • When I painted my 54 I didn't like the single color so decided to go 2 tone and did it my own way.....I know its not factory but what do you think?
  • Another view of it.

The car looks great. It is good to see any Hudson on the road and funny thing about it is they all look good going down the street....
  • Every Stepdown I've owned (all six of them, I know some of you are likely in the hundreds!;)) has been a factory two-color car. One Wasp, three Hornets and a Commodore. Only the '50 Pacemaker coupe was monotone (black).

    Harry,

Your car looks great. The paint layout makes the car appear longer. Job well done.

I think it looks great... so subtle that the lay person (me included) thinks it looks factory!

  • thanks...my painter wasn't sure how to do the back end and came up with the way it is with a subtle piece of pinstripe in a darker brown to separate the two colors...I was very pleased with the result.
