Identify these starters?

I was supposed to be helping Ritchie get a new starter. I know the one on the right is from later-model stepdowns ('51-'54, I think). The one on the left I took off of an earlier std. transmission. Question: Is it std. transmission-specific, or early stepdown-specific?

The one on the left looks like the starter from my 50 Pacemaker. I was told that the 232 used a smaller starter motor than the 262/308 starters, but that they are interchangable otherwise. Hopefully someone here can confirm that as well.

Rusell - the starter on the left is the style used for standard transmissions. The starter on the right would be the style used on automatic equipped Hudsons. The main difference is on the auto style the starter drive moves from the starter housing into the ring gear. On the standard style, the starter drive rides behind the ring gear/flywheel, and when the starter turns the drive unit moves forward into the ring gear. Is this "as clear as mud"?

The starter on the left is for a step-down standard transmission cars and the one on the right is strictly hydro-matic for 51's - 54's.

Thanks, everyone. That's pretty much what I thought.

New question: Why the different starters for std. and auto trans? I understand the need for more power on the auto trans., but why the different shaft (incoming vs. outgoing)?

Thats a good question...

I assume since the Automatic Converter required a larger diameter flywheel so engineering probably adapted the starter that came with the transmission set-up bolting into the bellhousing rather than re create a substitute....

Ken is right. Look on the tag and see what the number of the starter is. MCL6006 FITS 48,49 AND MODELS 501,502,503,504. MZ4159 FITS 500,50A. MCH6109 FITS51-54 254ci,262ci308ci motors . the 254 is the 8. all ST cars. MCH6204 51-54 auto. trans. Hope this helps
