Stepdown tappet clearances - again

I've just reset the tappets on my 53 308 cold at 12 thou and 15 thou, as opposed to 10 thou and 12 thou for the manual's hot setting.

I know, I know. The sky did grow dark with locusts and great multitudes of poisonous snakes writhed across the workshop floor, but apart from that there were no problems and the car is running fine.

What I have just noticed in the Hudson Technical Service Bulletins TS77-12 - many thanks to Alex Burr - is that cold clearances for the 55 308, where you have no option but to set the tappets cold and you do get dispensation from the locusts and snakes, are shown as 12 thou and 19 thou.

I agree with .012" for the inlet cold but .019" for the exhaust seems excessive. Any thoughts from the panel?

An interesting theology problem. If you have a 55 308 in a stepdown and set the tappets cold, do you just get the snakes and no locusts, or maybe half the snakes and half the locusts?

Go to my web site list www.hetclub.org/burr and scroll down to the 2nd "technical service bulletin...." link and check out bulletin TS 78-3.

This is a valve adjustment chart furnished by Jack Clifford for use on all "232", "262" and "308" six cylinder engines when setting valve lash with a cold engine.

All Hudsons from 1948 to 1955 set cold, intake, 0.014 and exhaust, 0.017. Factory told all to set hot, 10 and 12, but all engines on the assembly line were set cold. Check the top of this forum as I just posted an answer about setting 55 valves. Walt.
