The tires on my 30 Essex Super Six are old Allstate tires with cracked sidewalls. So I need to replace them before the car is eventually on the road. What all is involved in replacing these size tires? I suppose you get new tires and tubes but do you have to put in new rim protectors and what is a flap (saw that on a tire site)?

  • You must be a young turd instead of an old fart, HO-HO . A flap is a flat rubber "belt " that goes on any rim that needs it to protect the tube from rubbing holes on rough places, such as the old spoke rims and some rims that are rivited .

Guess I'm just a semi-old fart. Thanks for the info.

These are the same tires that 30-31 Fords use, and therefore easy to find at Coker or Kelsey et al. Do put on flaps, the flexing of the tube will cause abrasion by friction. Tiny burrs in the 80 year old rims are probably present. try to sand the inner rim areas to eliminate them. Some paint or coating next to curtail rust etc. Put on flaps. Next the tubes. Most tubes come with vulcanized air valves. Problem... I don't know if Essex used metal Schrader valves like Ford, maybe Geoff or some one can answer that. Fit the tube into the tire evenly and push the tube valve through the hole in the rim. Now pull the two over the rim as much as possible. The rest is pulled on by leveraging two tire spoons around the outer bead, be carefull not to catch the tube and rim with the spoon as this could tear the tube. Also,a lot of talcum powder sprinkeled around the tube and in the tire eases installation. Tire spoons are available at Model A Ford suppliers. Regarding the valves, You don't want the valves to shift in the rim hole. This could break the valve stem. A grommet will avoid this, or as Ford did use metal stems, But that another thing. Did lots of Fords not Essex. Are these wood spokes?
  • Most old car part sellers will have little short spoons intended to carry in the car, fixing a flat was just part of the drive back in the day . Go to a truck parts or dealer / tire dealer / maybe NAPA and get you some nice long ones used to change truck tires , get the flat spoon and the one with an 'S' shape on one end , lots easier for for us REAL old farts to get the job done BUD

Easy is called "Big O Tires." Changed a lot of tires in my time (Dad owned a tire shop) there are a lot of other ways that I like to spend my time; and, if you buy your Coker tires from Big O they carry all the road hazard stuff and they mount and ballance for free. Saves you a lot of work and worry. By the way, our local Big O does not charge freight--another saving...

I've got 4 tires, 4 tubes and 4 flaps coming. I like idea of having the means to fix a flat if I had to. There is no spare with this car when I bought it, I'm looking for a used 5.00-19 rim for a spare. Saw new ones for $200 but I'll keep looking.

There's a wealth of information here, thanks.

Brownie, thanks for the tip re Big O tires. I need to replace my Hornet tires next year, I had no idea that Big O will order them from Coker and mount them for free.
  • RON, and I reckon everyone , Big O's are franchises . Our local guy buys tires that don't come from Big'O on his own to resell . Whether Big O knows that or not I don't know . I got a heck of a deal on some for my 4x4 pickup from him but the only warranty he gave was thru him , not other Big O dealers . Whether this holds true in all situations I don't know , so check your local dealer and ask ALL the questions . BUD

Sorry Barry I didn't read your post correctly. Yes I have 3 old Allstate 4.75/5-19 sitting outside my garage. The fourth was a Firestone I kept for the spare as it was in good shape. Your welcome to them, if three is a help.
