stepdown interior question- rubber mats?
Hi All,
I was thinking/daydreaming today about putting in a rubber mat on the front floor board instead of putting carpet in on my 49 Commodore 6. Was this an option when the car was new? I know that K-gap sells a rubber floor mat..if anyone has any pics of one installed I would appreciate seeing it.
Thanks,Lisa G

I INSTALLED ONE IN MY 34 HUDSON 8 SEDAN AND IT LOOKS GREAT BUT I DO NOT THINK IT IS WIDE ENOUGH FOR THE STEP/DOWN BODY

I talked with someone from K-Gap nearly a couple of years ago at the Auburn, IN Hudson National about K-Gap producing a stepdown rubber front floor mat. I recall him saying something that the front floor mat would be very difficult and costly to remake due to the type of molding necessary to correctly make it.0

The 1948 thru 1950 Hudsons all had a full width rubber mat in the front seat compartment - even '51 & '52 pacemaker and Wasp series continued to carry the rubber front mat. Carpet for the front was reserved for the Commodores and Hornets thru '52. '53 Wasps had the rubber mat, and the rest of the line had carpet. In '54, I beleive all modesl of the senior cars used carpet in front. All Jets used rubber mats in the front.0

The 48-50 floor mat would be a great item to reproduce. How much $ is too much?0

I need a mat as well. However, last year when I asked about them, I was told "Way Too Much To Be Worth The Effort" by nearly everyone on this forum.0 -
My 54 Hornet Special has rubber floor mats, front and rear, gray in color, as the Special came thru with Super Wasp trim.

Bruce,
Could you post some pics of the mats in your '54 ?
Is it rubber mats on top of carpeting or just the mat...how is held in place?
Thanks,

I won't be able to do that for several weeks or more. The mats had a jute backing bonded to them and were sopping wet even though the car had been in dry storage for maybe 2 years. I threw the jute away. Yes, mildew smell and rusted the floor pan, although not all the way thru. Those mats and also those of other car companies were never glued down, they just laid in place. The door sill plates and the kick panels usually had enough force to keep them in place. I will have to get some warm days to soften the now hardened rubber so they will lay flat enough for pictures. FYI, I intend to put carpet in.
