55 Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on my 55 308 went south. I have a spare for my 51 308 on the shelf. Will it fit? I thought it would work, but when I took the pump off of the 55, the arm was a little different. It has a curved piece that fits on the lobe and slides back and forth on the arm. Is this specific to hash 308's, or will my earlier pump work fine?

I don't know what the differences are, but the numbers are:

    Carter M729SA - 1948-1954

    AC (Fuel & Vacuum)

    583 - 1948-1952; 1953 early

    4057 - 1953 later; 1954

    Carter M729SB - 1942-54 all; 1955-1956 Wasp

    Fuel/Vacuum Pump

    Carter - M2033S - 1955-56 Hornet 6

    Carter - M2256S - 1955-56 Hornet V-8

    AC - 4250 - 1955-56 Wasp, Hornet 6

    AC - 4293 - 1955-56 Hornet V-8

I don't know if this helps you at all, but I do have a mechanical fuel pump from a 352 Packard v8....from my 56 hudson

I went ahead and put the earlier pump on the 55 308. It's pumping fuel and the engine is running. Hopefully it doesn't cause any damage. If anyone has a definitive answer, let me know.

The arm with the sliding action is no different than the the 48 to 54 pumps. Just make sure you install the gasket pack between pump and block. They used that one to make the engine quieter. Walt.

Thanks Walt. That's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure.
