Caravan to Spokane National
Well it seems that I and Fred Connors will be leading a group from the Seattle area to the Spokane National. We plan on meeting in Issaquah Wa., on Sunday August 1 at the XXX restaurant. After a brief drivers meeting, heading out no later than 10:30. The first stop will be in Ellensburg, for gas and eats or vice versa., then back on the road. If you are interested in joining our caravan PLEASE let me know. There are more details to work out, but we could use one or two chase trucks with empty car trailers. Thanks Lou Cote

Hey Lou,
If all goes as planned (!) I will try to meet up with y'all somewhere between Hiway 18 and the pass. I am out here in Port Orchard so that makes good sense to me. Also, I REALLY like the idea of a couple chasers with trailers!~:D
Will stay in touch,
Jeff0 -
I plan to be there (XXX Issaquah), but will be bringing camper and trailer with car on it, so won't be empty. But could be emptied in a pinch, to haul someone somewhere then come back to reload and resume the trip.

Lou,
With being unemployed last year, my hopes of having the 49 in any kind of shape for Spokane went out the window.
Shame - being so close...but, I may certainly be able to line up taking my truck and trailer along.
The only thing is - not planning on going I haven't even looked into renting a room, obviously would need a place I can park the rig and trailer.0 -
Hay Rambo, put the Hudson on the trailer and bring it as it is. One good thing about Hudson folks is that we like to look at cars in all stages of repair/restoration or hot rodding..... You need a vacation after what you have been through and we would like to see you there and jaw about our projects.... Look me up and I'll buy you breakfast. I start out in the lot around six and only leave when my wife calls me around ten.... Most likely I will be standing somewhere around the English Hudson......0
-
Dan, Have you given any thought to sharing a room with someone at Spokane to cut down on your costs? The two national [Hudson & Studebaker] events that I'm attending this year, I found a roomate to cut my costs. I would put an ad on this site and see what happens, you could some new Hudson folk. It may make it possible for someone to attend that doesn't have the $$$ for a room by themselves. Also I will be talking to the powers that be about a fuel stipend for empty trailer chase vehicles. Keep us posted. Lou Cote :cool:0

OK folks who besides the Bellingham/Ferndale group wants to leave for Spokane on Sunday August 1 ? Were only about ELEVEN WEEKS away. See how fast time flies. Jerry K., this needs to get into our newsletter for the next issue. Contact me PLEASE. Lou Cote :cool:0

Eleven weeks? Wow, it's sneaking up on us! I'm going to the DMV this week to bring the registration current on the Jet and buy license plates.0
-
Sarah, just a suggestion but I would get the collector plate, you only have to pay once. Of course if you are going to use it as a daily driver then you have fewer options. Lou Cote PS can you get a hold of Jerry K. and get this info into the Cork Clutch. :cool:0
-
Sarah, the applicable law is RCW 46.16.305 and .307. Year of manufacture plate is the best deal going- 25 bucks to register, good for life, no annual renewal. You only have to have one plate (on the rear). Section 307 says "A collectors' vehicle licensed under RCW 46.16.305(1) may only be used for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and occasional pleasure driving."
Washington's law is one of the more liberal in the country- many don't allow any "occasional pleasure driving". Heard of a guy in another state who got ticketed for driving his collector car to a repair facility for repairs- cop said he should have trailered it.0 -

When you talk about liberal I have to mention Northern Utah. Early this spring, had just finished the wiring and getting ready to go to the paint shop. The car had no doors, no fenders, no lights, no windows, no licence plates--on and on. But, it was running for the first time. No way was I going to trailer it the ten miles home. So with a crate for the seat--and driving English style I was off. About five miles from home I heard the cop--no mirrors to see out of. I pulled over and figured I had bought the farm. The Highway Patrol walked up the side of the car with a big grin on his face. "What the "HE@+!!" do we have here?" After about a 20 minute discussion I was on my way. No ticket, now lecture--nothing? Sometimes it pays to drive a Hudson.
By the way, getting this thread back on track. A bunch of us driving from Utah are meeting up with some Montana, Idaho and Wyoming folks Saturday Night in Missoula, Mt. We plan to drive into spokane on Sunday. Might see some of you folks in Montana......

I once had a similar situation - only I was towing a 52 Wasp parts sedan from one town to another, back in Maine where I used to live. I'd lost storage and was moving the car to new storage. I was using a tow bar, so no problem. Right!!!!!!
The sedan wasn't quite as stripped as the one mentioned earlier - but it had no doors, no hood or trunk lid, no left front fender, no left rear fender (al-be-it the parts were in the back of my truck.) But it did run - tho no exhaust system other than the headers and pipe back to where the muffler should have been.
Halfway to the new storage the truck died. Was no way I could leave it where it was - a narrow 2-lane road with 6 foot drainage ditches for shoulders. I forget why now, but the Wasp had a trailer hitch on it. Ah ha!!!! Simple - switch the tow bar from the truck to the Hudson and tow the truck. Managed to do that without somebody running over me - remember, I'm in the middle of that afore-mentioned narrow two lane highway.
So we get the truck hooked to the Wasp and away we go. Now I'm gonna roughly estimate there might - I say MIGHT - be a state cop come down that road about, roughly, every 20 years of so. Ain't now locals around there and the county mounties are usually busy elsewhere. So, that day must have marked the 20th anniversary because here comes a state cop going the other way. He near to run off the road looking at this lashup going down the road.
He found a place to turn around, we found a place to pull over far enough to get out of everybody's way and he and I had a very interesting conversation. He did agree I couldn't leave the car and the truck in that particular area. I really think, to this, day he didn't give me a ticket simply because he couldn't think of what to write it up for - or he didn't really want to spend a half hour writing up about 10 pages of violations.

Some of us are leaving for Spokane from Cardston,Alberta. We will be meeting there for a Show/Shine on Sunday prior. Of course, all are welcome to join the Canadian crew.0
-
How far from Cardston to Spokane? Appproxmate driving time?
Alex:
That is one of the best stories of "trading places" that I have heard of. I have done some "unforgiveable" stunts that I wont mention here for fear of ruining reputations, and maybe not being forgiven. And we all pray our kids wont hear of it and the grandchildren attempting a similar stunt. Enough. Thanks, Bob0 -
Cardston to Spokane is approx 8 hr drive. Thing is its on the way if you are travelling west....just come north at Sweetgrass/ Coutts and take the first hiway going west and you will come into Cardston in about 40 miles. Then leaving Cardston you can go south through another border crossing at Carway or for a real nice Scenic drive continue through Canada west through the Crowsnest Pass and go into British Columbia and south to Spokane . That way there are no high mountain passes.0

I'm curious how many will be trailering their Hudson versus driving it. My dilemna is that my vehicles don't have a tow hitch. To have one installed can run $500 and to rent an auto transporter is around $60/day. The Jet seems to be running well with the exception of operator error (stalling it), but highways speeds and summer heat also have me worried. I just don't want to get stuck with gramma and the kids on board. My husband can't get out of work, so he suggested I take the family car and leave the Hudson at home. I said that wasn't an option!0

Hey Sarah,
I have the same concerns~! I am doing my best to get ready and just gonna go for it myself. I will have a standby person (father in law) who can come and get me if necessary tho!
On the hitch subject, I bought my last one from U Haul and put it on myself. Not a tough project at all. Also last weekend my neighbor bought a kit from-believe it or not- Wal Mart and put it on himself. And hes not a super mechanical kind of guy. I checked it out for him and verified his torques on the bolts and all was good and he towed his trailer no problems.
I probably will be bringing up the rear on the caravan for the most part due to limited speed so I can keep a watchful eye for any "roadside mishaps", or heaven forbid, lost parts!:)
Jeff0 -
I'm trailering mine, because I'm bringing my pickup/camper to stay in. I'm also concerned about driving the Hudson that far- I don't think mine is in good enough shape mechanically to set off on a long trek.
What would your towing vehicle be? To tow a car on a car trailer, you need a fairly substantial vehicle, because you're looking at close to 5,000 lbs. A tow dolly might be a better solution- you have to disconnect the driveline, but that's not a big deal.0 -

Hi Jeff:
Your mention of lost parts reminded me of when I moved to a new neighborhood. From 1953 - 54, I walked about a mile to grade school. On the way home from school I would pick up nuts, bolts, and washers off the street. By the time I got home my pockets were full. Some days were more rewarding than others. But there was always treasure to be found.
Thinking back now, it makes me think, maybe there were alot of cars coming off the assembly line with loose bolts.
When I became a mechanic that treasure collection came in handy when an older car came in with a missing or broken bolt.
Jeff, I wish you and all the others going to Spokan a safe and trouble free trip. Have a good time. I wish I could be going with you.
Have a good day. Lee0 -

I'd put the hitch on a BMW X-5 with V8, which has at least a 6,000 lb towing capacity. My dad has a tow dolly I could use, but I'm not sure that I want to test my luck with the driveline. That, and my spendy paint job is that much closer to road debris.
I could manage to install the hitch itself, but with all the electronics on board this thing, the wiring would be intimidating.0 -
Hey Sarah,
If it is set up to tow their is probably a plug up under the rear that you can buy the proper mate to set it up. Most of the newer rigs are that way. They arent cheap but its a lot easier to 'plug and play' than it is to trace and tap into wires!
Good luck!

I'm STILL picking up nuts, bolts, washers, etc off the street on my daily walk about. Been doing it for over 60 years.
At one time I had a 5 gallon bucket chock full - decided the time had come to clean things out, but didn't want to be bothered with finding somebody to take the bucket off my hands. So, on the way to work there was a tree stump on a side road I took that stood about 2 to 3 feet high. I left said bucket there at around 7 am - on my way home from work around 4pm said bucket was gone.
End of storage problem.
