29 Hudson Sedan - Arrived last week.

Pulled thermostat sender and fittings. Found about 3/8" of crud using finger method. Screwdriver lifted a bunch of brown soft mud probably loosened by new antifreeze put in about 6 months earlier by seller.

Honeycomb radiator disconnected - unknow internal state at this point.

Best options beside pulling head.

Freeze plug removal with high pressure washer?

Hot water hose down upper ports?

Thanks

Jack

All of the above.. and you might try a short piece of speedometer cable in an electric drill ..you will be able to reach into some really remote parts of the engine. After all the cleaning, put a piece of nylon stocking across the output hose to the radiator to act as a filter to pick up the stuff that is now in circulation. This will require removal and cleaning a few times. but may prevent radiator clogging.

Great! I believe a slide hammer for the side freeze plugs. Any issues with the freeze plugs on this engine. I believe I saw several references to a Napa replacement plug.

Also thinking of initially using a wet/dry shop vac to try and pickup as much as possible so it doesn't all head down into the water pump.

If I was to pull the head who makes the best upper gasket set for this engine.; Olson?

For head gasket, also check with the Maas's- www dot 21stcenturyhudson dot net. Your looking for the best gasket, and ironically, I think it's Best brand that they carry. Supposedly cures all the problems of leaking gaskets with finicky aluminum heads.

    All,

I'm going to try alittle different approach first. I've picked up a 1/2 hp pump and a 5 plating filter socks (ebay 220602025439) 10 micron. I'm going to mock up a reverse flush setup that will run heated antifreeze (~ 150- 200 degrees) through the engine only at a pretty good flow rate continuely for days. Since the mud was loose I'm hoping the more rapid flow rate will draw alot of it out. It'll take about a week for all parts to arrive then I'll try it. I'll also do the radiator reversed and upside down after an initial drain right side up .

The parts cost is about equal to the head and manifold gaskets. Might prove cost effective.

when you got sludge and stuff like you have no flush solution will ususally get it all. I've used a power washer in the water chambers on other engines I've had. This is assuming you can get at the freeze plugs.

    Morning Aaron,

Freeze plug removal with high pressure wash was my initial thought.

I'm going to try the high pressure back wash for a week straight and se what comes out. I expect not to get it all but alot will reduce the unequal heating. I've not run this engine yet myself so I have no idea if the block is cracked or there are other issues. I just don't want to start digging into the engine, button it back up then find I have to take it apart again for another major problem.
