stepdown seat frame restoration tip
I set out to restore the front seat frame from my '54 and soon realized that that the central three rows of original burlap covered springs were too rusty and the burlap rotten, skanky, and full of debris. Because I also have a C1 Corvette I knew that most Corvette parts suppliers sell a generic replacement spring set. These sets run about $40 each (you need two to complete the front seat) and come with cloth covered springs connected by hog rings (see below). The springs are almost exactly the same size as the originals. If you separate the set into two groups of three rows, they easily fit in the seat were the originals went. The remaining row and part of the second set can be used to complete the job. The pictures below show the seat before sandblasting and after the removal of the original burlap covered springs. The rest follow the description above.
