1950 Pacemaker Questions

I have some questions about this car. Please don’t take this as picking on this car. My goal is to learn about how they came from the factory, not to point out what may be wrong.
First, the front fender emblems – these have HUDSON written on them. My parts car (model 500) has the same but my “good†car (model 50A) has no writing. I had always thought that this was a difference between the standard and deluxe Pacemakers, but the parts manual seems to indicate that they share the same part.
Second, the antenna is mounted on the fender, not above the windshield. It could have been moved but the car is supposed to have the original headliner (looks like it to me) and the area where the antenna knob would normally be is intact. I think I just came up with the answer to this one myself. Question three was going to be if that was a radio delete plate mounted below the radio. Assuming that it is, my guess is that this car came without a radio (and therefore no antenna) so the antenna was added to the fender when the radio was installed.
This brings up another question – what makes a Pacemaker Deluxe different from a Pacemaker? I've only come up with three things:
Were there other things like radio and heater included?
Sorry about all of the questions - it's too hot to work on the car directly so I'm trying to find out everything about it instead.

Hi Chris,
I may be mistaken, (but I don't think that I am) I owned this car for two years here in south central Indiana. The dead give away to me are the two International Harvester mirrors attached to the front fenders.
This car has a very early serial number and has a couple of things I belive were just as it came from the factory. Including the front fender emblems chrome plates that you would have normally found on a 48 or 49 model. The car is not a deluxe. It did not have a radio either.
This car was originally green and has been sold a couple of times already now on ebay.
The current showing of the car shows the firewall now painted red. I do believe that several people have now spent lots of money on chrome, paint, seat covers, radio, carpet, etc.
This was a dandy little driver while I owned it. I probably would have just left it that way. (maybe add OD)
Pacemaker deluxe does have the steering wheel you speak of, cloth door panel that matches the deluxe seat covers too.
Radio and heater, dome lights, were options on either.
My current 50 P deluxe has radio and heater, but no interior lights.
It also has the single horn.
Hope this helps.

Tim,
Is this the same car?

If so, I saw it at a car show in Melbourne, Florida two or three years ago. It was red then but the paint didn't look quite this good and it still had the original upholstery which looked pretty good if I remember correctly.
Now that you mention it, I remember asking the guy about the fender emblems and he told me the same thing about it being an early model. I'd forgotten all about that until you mentioned the IH mirrors. For some reason, that jogged something in my head.
As to the deluxe, maybe dual horns was an option on any Pacemaker? Was the only difference the steering wheel and cloth inserts?0 -
Yes, same car.
When you opened the hood you saw the Jefferson Green firewall. Which has now been changed.
The paint was a huge improvement over when I had the car, but I'm still not sure it was worth the cost. I can't imagine having done it twice now.
The car was sold from Indy on ebay to Florida, Florida to Arizona.
(I don't know why I know all of this....)
I have a picture of it in my garage before any of this work was done.
Just never have figured out how to post to this site.
Send me your email and I'll send it to you.
Hopefully someone else can pump in more differences of the deluxe and standard Pacemakers.
I believe another difference is the stainless that runs front to back above the rockers is polished on the deluxe, body color on the standard Pacemaker.
My parents first NEW car was a 50 P Brougham. Not the one I now own, but like it.

The 50A also included the chrome front door Vent frame, and I beleive the rear quarter windows opened as they did on the Super Commodore Series.
I also thought the 50A included the front dome light over the windshield.0 -
I believe the burlap dash was on all 50 Pacemakers.
Correct with the chrome trim around the vent windows too.
Don't know though about the rear vents opening on a 50 deluxe sedan.

We went through the business about the fake burlap pattern about six months ago and agreed that it was used on all '50 Pacemakers. I know because I was the one who asked the question. According to the brochure, "Here's the modern-design Pacemaker instrument panel with new and exclusive fabric-pattern finish." I have been in contact with someone who replicates it and plan to have mine done when I get that far.
As to the dome lights, I'm pretty sure both of mine have them. I'll have to go out and look at the vent window trim. I can't comment on the rear windows since both of mine are broughams.
I wonder if the deluxe was trim plus a package of certain options. One cool one that mine has is an air hose that goes from the side of the trunk lid to the spare so you can check the air in your spare without opening the trunk.0 -
I can't seem to access the pictures. Something about restricted access.
In cruising around the web today, I think I found another Pacemaker difference - door straps vs. door handles. Can anyone verify?0 -
I have seen two different sizes for the rear window, both one piece glass. I think my 50A two door has a small rear window. The rear side windows roll down part way also.

yes, and the one pictured is the big one, right? It seems I've seen some with smaller rear windows as well. I'm pretty sure Larry Kennedy's daily driver has one.0

The window in the picture is of the standard rear window for 1948-49 all and the 1950 Pacemaker Sedan and Brougham. The Coupes used a smaller top to bottom window.0 -

Russell, I believe the one in the picture is the "small window," at least for a 50A. I'm not the expert though.
