Essex 6 Exhaust Manifold/Heat Riser Installation

On the Essex 6 cylinder engines if you are installing the exhaust manifold and heat riser as one unit on the block what is the bolt tightening sequence? Do you tighten down the manifold to the block first then the riser to intake bolts second or what? Also on the exhaust manifold itself, what is the torque sequence to safely tighten the nuts on the studs to prevent a welded manifold form possibly re-breaking? Thanks.

Steve, it's best to assemble the assembly to the block with the nuts and bolts just loose. Fit it in place, and tap the manifold down with a fibre or lead hamme 4each end and the center, and tap the heat riser inwards. then gradually tighten the bolts and nuts a bit at a time, and continue to tap the manifold and heat riser so they can assume the correct positions, and finally tighten properly. The four 1/4" bolts holding the inlet to the block tighten to 10 lbs, the three 5/16" bolt sholding the mainfild extension to the inlet, 15 lbs, and the three 3/8" nuts holding the manifold to the block to 25 lbs.

Repeat after the engine has warmed up.

Thanks Geoff. I sure needed those torque numbers. I have the thick copper gaskets from Dale Cooper and wondered how to compress them properly.
