clutch question
My clutch was recorked 3 years agonnot used much since,, seemed to shudder a bit when cold and pulling away,so i thought id better top it up with the same ford ATF i used before.Seemed to take quite a bit of fluid, then upon testing, found the gears hard to engage and the clutch very stiff.Have i just put too much in or have i done something dumb(again!).?How much fluid is correct? i will probably drain it and start again with dexron 3,but am unsure of correct amount.Any advice appreciated

Don't use the ford fluid use dextron I have used this in my Hudson for years and it is as smooth as,make sure you flush that ford rubbish out before topping up with dextron. Not sure of the amount for Terra but I am sure someone will chime in with the correct amount.

G'Day Skipster,
1/3rd pint is the correct amount, if it still shudders a bit, you can add a little bit more.Dextron is the correct one to use.
NEVER USE FORD ATF as the boiling point is lower and will cause slippage when hot.0 -
DON'T overfill it! The clutch will drag, making it hard to get into gear and will get worse as it warms up. 1/3 pint..thats all.0

Thanks folks, will flush it and refill tomorrow. Now,ive just got to figure out how much a 1/3 of a pint is in metric, and if there is a difference between english and american pints,on and on it goes!0

I'm lucky as I have 1/3rd pint milk bottle that we used to get in our early days at school and I use that to measure my fluid.
Do you remember the milk was delivered to the school and left in the sun until recess time, yuk.0 -
Skipster.
I just measured my 1/3rd pint milk bottle and it come to 185 mls close enough.
When I suggested if the clutch shuddders to add a bit more, you may only have to add like a thimble full or two, does not take a huge amount to get it right on.If it slips you have too much. Ihave fiddled with these clutches here in Oz for 45 years and have just rebuilt a 10" clutch for a guy up north and have a 9" coming in the mail today to rebuild.0 -
What model car are we talking about? The amount varies depending on the type of clutch. It seems most people assume that we only ever consider Step-downs. Hudson made cars for 45 years with several different versions of the cork clutch.0

I remember there was a blackmarket trade in Nestles Quick, banned by the teacher,at our 17 kid country school.Chocolate was in high demand, pineapple not so much ,to add to the awful milk we were forced to drink.Least it wasnt home made hudsonite, some of those recipes sound grim,id rather NOT know what was in it!0 -

a US pint is considerby smaller than the UK.
1 pint UK = 1.2 pint US
1/3 pint US = 158 ml0 -
AHA! i thought there was something like that.Still, its good that the UK has at least one thing bigger than the States, although they say size doesnt matter.0

"Its not the size mate, but how you use it!!!" HA HA
Good luck,

Dumped the ford ATF,added Dextron 3(in the correct amount) and became mobile again. It may be my imagination, but the clutch seems smoother with the dextron. Thanks for all the advice folks.0
