Front shocks question

I recently replaced the left front shock absorber on my '50 Pacemaker Deluxe (the one before it came loose and the top shaft on the shock was damaged). One question I have after the installation is how much should you tighten the top and lower nuts against the rubber bushings on the front shock absorber? Is there a torque setting? I checked several older auto mechanics books, the '52 Hudson Mechanical Procedure Manual and even this forum and in short, "nobody seems to know!" Thanks for any help here and by the way, I have Monroe 5751's up front.

I tighten them to the point they mushroom to the size of metal washer

There is usually a instruction sheet inside the shock box that says and illustrates just what Russ and Jeff said.

Thanks for all the responses, especially from Russ. I have mine too tight and will obviously loosen them a bit. Interestingly, the shock I used to replace the old one had no instructions on installation inside the box it came in nor anything on the box itself.
