Tinkering on the '37 Terraplane

:pI have the Terraplane nearly back together, but decided to pull the oil pan as some oil was lost when installing the engine trans combination, pretty good angle. Good thing that I did, as the front two troughs were low on oil. I understand that they should be full. Also does it take two qu:)arts of oil to fill the trough before installing? And a second question, the oil pan gaskets that I have are cork, and old, they have shrunk. Is it possible to soak them in water for them to regain their origional shape? I really appreciate all the input and help that I have recieved from the members on this forum. I even renewed my membership in the HET Club. Unable to make Spokane this year, but will try for Gettysburg in 2012. Thanks again. Arnie in Nevada.

New oil pan gaskets are available, you don't have to rely on cork anymore. I'm not sure who makes them...maybe Dale Cooper.
As to the amount in the troughs, just pour in whatever it will take. I always figured that you should spin the engine slowly by hand anyway, when you first installed it, to move the oil up into the system while "cranking" at a very slow speed so as to avoid any damage. Even when you're ready to start it, you might want to just pull the coil wire and crank it around for a few revolutions with the starter, in order to splash some oil around, before letting it go full tilt.0 -
I pour ALL of the oil in the fuel pump mounting hole AFTER I get the engine in useing as big a hose as I can get in the opening and dump it in fast , all of it goes on top of the top tray . Gaskets : Been making my own from non-corugated cardboard slip sheets I get free at a local hardware I do quite a bit of bussiness with , they come to them under their stock replacement and they toss them or give them away . I use a hollow punch to make neat holes and spray with red permatex sealer ---BUD0
