OK so now I got my 262 (w/over drive) engine swap done all hooked up. Took her out for a spin the first time today. Good feeling but...

The tranny is clicking as if overdrive is engaged but it isn't, it's turned off. I have it wired to a toggle switch. This mostly seems to happen going through 2nd gear as far as I can tell. Is it a normal tranny sound? It doesn't sound quite as loud as the OD solenoid kicking in it's quieter but the same sound.

I seem to be able to run up first gear just as high as 2nd gear used to go that's my initial impression and I know you're not supposed to run OD at less than 25 mph.



Could this have to do with the position of the OD pull cable? I have that currently pushed in. and the OD lever under the trans is back (switched toward the rear of the car) Is that right?



I'm also having trouble shifting her into reverse sometimes. probably the whole linkage needs to be re-adjusted. The only other part of the equation is that the wiring is old and frankly kinda crummy.



Any thoughts before I go getting into trouble playing with it would be deeply appreciated.

    If the overdrive lever is pushed in, the OD should be engaged. You want the OD lever pulled out to disingage.

    Aaron: The OD should be disengaged mechanically before shifting to reverse. Using the Internet you can find and download a complete ops and maintenance manual for Borg Warner OD.



    Any wiring problems will cause a variety of operational discepancies. The harness is simple and replacing the wires will go a long way to solving ops problems.

    Yes it does. Are you using a governor or just the dash switch? If using just a dash switch I wouldn't turn the o/d on until you are in top gear.

    Yes I'm using a dash switch to bypass the govenor and as in the past I don't engage the OD until I'm at the top of 3rd gear. It's probably engaged and that's a big part of my problem.

    If you are putting all the current through your dash switch, it couldbe overloading the switch contacts. The original set-up provides ground through the govenor to energise the relay, which provides the voltage from the A terminal of the voltage regulator, for the pull-in coil of the solenoid. This energises, which closes the internal contacts for the hold-in coil and at the same time opens the pull-in contacts (which take a much greater contact. You need to ensure that you have your wiring correct and a heavy duty switch to pull the solenoid in. The original wiring only allows the overdrive to activate when the generator is charging, and the govenor points closed.

    The wiring going to the solenoid and the switch is currently much fatter gage wire than original. Not sure just how heavy the switch is but it's a rather large toggle switch. I may end up re-doing the wiring for the whole car in the near future.
