Need a little help; see below incoming email from Allen, could one of the FORUM members answer or better yet post pictures of their door seals in question...I remember one seal is screwed to door, lower bottom door is glued; however pictures are worth a thousand words...

Thanks, Ray

Hi Ray,

Need a little help please. I cant find any pictures and am unsure (feeling retarded). Door seals.

First picture is the door bottom seal. I am assuming it just glues in place but which

way does it fit to the bottom of the door? K-gap seal 142

Second few is the door pillar. Is this the right seal for this area. Does it screw into place down the pillar?

K-gap 137 it is a flat shape rubber pictured.

I got the s shape seal no problem.

The main question is what seals the complete door to the body? Is there a seal that goes around the door? or the body?

We must be missing this seal? Was looking at k-gap book is the seal we need a #130? I cant seem to find any pictures

of this stuff.

  • Ray again,

I just emailed K-Gap and received automatic computer generated message whereby, Kayelene and Dany attending Nationals and will not return until 8/16, I am trying to finish car and remember some members had recommendations for a softer door seal, if anybody has additional information I'd appreciate learning?

    Thanks,

    Ray
  • Send an email to "Hudsonguy". You can find him on the member list. He got some softer seals from McMaster-Carr and thinks they are great. The price is right and I got some for my 54 Hornet. On the 54's the seals mount on the doors and not the body. Hudsonguy was very helpful.

    Hope this helps,

    Doug
  • Good Morning Doug,

Thanks for your time and input, I sent email to HudsonGuy this morning...

  • Ray...

The attached picture is the only door gaskets picture I could find at this time ... should help Allen with that installation.

The door bottom seal is glued to the bottom of the door

The remaining seal for the door is glued to the body. On a coupe it starts at the rear of the door at the bottom of door opening and continues around the opening until it intersects the dash area of the opening. The S rubber compresses against this body rubber to complete the top seal and the bottom seal compresses against the sill plates to seal the bottom of the door.

The McMaster-Carr information is as follows:

Part number for the seal is: 93085K89
Description: Adhesive Back Foam Rubber Bulb Seal, 11/16" overall width, 1/2" overall height

Unit Price (per foot) is $0.71

This item can be ordered online at http://www.mcmaster.com/

Type in the part number and it will lead your through the order process... cost me $5.00 to have it shipped. I replaced all the seals on my sedan with this seal... works great.

    Cheers Buddy.

    Ray,

I didn't receive an email, so I'm not sure what happened there. Nevertheless, the above McMaster part number is what I used for my '49 sedan, and couldn't be happier with the results. I bought 40' of P/N 93085K89, which I used around all the door openings, and the door bottoms. I also bought 20' of P/N 93085K13 for the front edges of all doors. These strips have good quality adhesive backs that allows repositioning for the first 72 hours, and then once it's cured, holds like crazy. Make sure it has a nice clean, painted surface to attach to.

The first P/N has the little lip that sticks out, and I positioned that to point toward the door openings (i.e. down for the long strip at the top of the door openings, and the door bottoms, and forward for the vertical one at the rear edge of the back door). You may have to readjust the doors to really tweak their 'fit' in at this point.

The first thing I did was remove the striker plates altogether. Then, as I worked on each side, I adjusted my back door first by adjusting the hinges first, then attaching striker plate and adjusting that. Then I did the front door. Sometimes at this point I had to go back and readjust the back door again, then follow that up with the front. When I was happy with everything, I torqued all the hinge screws to 20 foot pounds, and the striker screws to about 7 foot pounds.

I've always been proud of my car, with the exception of when it came time to close a door. Passengers could rarely get it right the first time, and I was always left squirming about how poorly my doors closed and fit. Since I installed the softer weatherstrips, and readjusted the doors (I also rebuilt my door hinges at the same time), one of the highlights is now closing the doors! At a recent car show, I heard a comment about how nice it sounded when the doors were closed! Good Luck, Doug
  • Good Morning, Doug,

Thanks for welcome email with instructions/description of your expereince, my car is a coupe and should be easier to accomplish satisfactory seal installation and more important door closing properly without a bang the first time.

I've already emailed Allen with Ken Gates recommendations/pictures and will sent him the benefit of what you are happy and successful with door seal experience.

From your eamil you sound extremely proud/happy with job well done, I'll ask Allen to order seals from McMaster Carr; we already have ordered lower piece of stainless stain trim from them that fits perfect on lower part of '52 Hornet door.

    Thanks again,

    Ray
