block advice for a blockhead

This engine is doing my head in,and its my first one!How do all you restoring vets do it?

Im a musician, not a mechanic, the last week has been a VERY steep learning curve.

The block has been badly bored 20-25thou over, the white metal bearings are ok,the pistons are serviceable(but i may. get a new piston and ring set),the crank is unusable(but i can source another). So,my choices are :1-hot tank the block, remetal the bearings, rebore to 40 thou, new rings and pistons, valves etc, probably buy a complete engine rebuild kit from egge or someone else in the HET world.:2-presure wash block, clean up the bearings and shim em,replace what valves /springs/rings etc need replacing, and put it all back together.

The choice seems obvious, spend the money(will sell a few more violins!)and do it right, but do i hunt for a better block that hasnt been taken out to 25thou,or go with what ive got?

You are not going to get much of an answer until you tell us what year and size engine you have.
  • I believe from your previous posts, that you have a '36 Terraplane.

If it were me, I would not consider boring the block you have more than .030" over just to be safe. Afraid the cylinder wall thickness might end up way too thin going more than that, possibly creating an overheating problem after spending all that money on parts, and machining.

If they say they need to go more than .030" to get it straightened out, I would start looking for another block. Hope this is a help to you.
  • yes,its a 36 terraplane
