I read a short time ago that one should add oil to the gas every now and then.

Is Marvel the best?

How much to a full tank (20 gallon)?

and what is the benefit?

    FYI

This Topic opinion will probably vary from person to person. However I am from old school beliver that Marvel Oil provides upper cyl lubrication especially to valve guides. I have used a cupful to 20 gal prior to filling for yrs in my Hudson St Rods and for oil down before storage.

I have been using it in my "splasher" for years. About 4 oz. per tankful (though it really should be about 4 oz. per 10 gals. but I'm cheap). I too have been told it helps lubricate the valve guides, though I'm not sure how that would happen (presumably it would have vaporized by the time it got anywhere near the exhaust guides).
  • I use StaBil at every gas fill up, about 3 ounces to the tank and also CD2 lead substitute about 2 ounces to a 20 gallon tank. These are just my preferences. The StaBil will help keep your gas from going stale. (You know how gas smells skunky after it has set for a couple months.) The CD2,( Like the Marvel oil ) is supposed to help lubricate the Exhaust seats, valve stems and guides, for cars designed to use leaded gas. Does it WORK? Who knows, I haven't had a failure or any need to tear the engine apart to check any of these claims.
The StaBil, Does work, I have had lawn mowers that sat for a year without being started and after a new plug they started and ran fine on the old gas.

I throw orange peels on my lawn to keep the elephants away, and it works 100%
  • Now hold on Geoff,

When did you change to Orange peels? I did a forum search and in March of 2005 you were using torn up newspaper to keep the animals off your lawn. Now it's orange peels.

I can't keep up with this new Technology.

Walt here. Add 4 ounces to every third tank full, along with 4 ounces of Instead of lead. Sta-bil is to be used if you are going to let your car set for at least 2 weeks, as the gas will start to turn too varnish. This is my way and my car can prove it, 132,000 in 12 years, and has never been touched. Adding to much is also bad.

Thanks for the information. Both products are inexpensive so I can not think of a single reason not to do it. I will start and use them both with all my collector cars.....

Newspapers were for the tiger preventative, orange peels for elephants, and banana skins for alligators. Seriously though, a gasoline stabiliser is probably the main thing anyone needs to consider if they are not using their cars for long periods, but even this is not usually necessary providing the tank is filled right up, thus preventing oxidisation, and evaporation of the aromatics used. . All the other products are designed mainly to make a profit for their purveyors.

Like Walt, I also use some lead additive every fillup even though Hudson has a high nickle block, just for extra assurance.

I use Sta-bil over the winter (when I think of it!), it's prudent to do so. But I gotta tell you, I've started that car up in April after sitting 6-7 months with NO Sta-bil, and there are no problems with the gasoline.

Walt here; What state do you live in? Here in CA gas will dry out in 2 weeks and fill your tank with varnish.

Several people told me Seafoam works better than Stabil- I tried it when I filled up for the winter, and actually didn't even use the whole tank of gas last summer, so some of it was a 1 1/2 year carryover this summer. Worked great.
