53 Super Wasp Clutch

Hi everyone, I need to replace the clutch on my 53 Super Wasp coupe. I have a 52 manual that says I need to remove the seat and the floor. I removed the seat and the mat but I am having a hard time seeing where the panel is removed, is it the same on 53? did something change? Or do I just need to dig in more? I don't see the seam where the 2 join--I did a clutch a few years ago on a 46 and removed the floor but I don't think I had such a hard time seeing the joint. Am I doing the right things here? Thanks, Dave

Should be there over the trans hump and held in with screws. On the short WB cars though it can be a pain in the arse. when you got it all loose you somethings got to put your back into the seat-back and flex the sheet metal with your feet to pop it out....maybe even a crow bar. Take out the carpet...vacum the floor pan...remove the brake pedal...OD switch if you have one...throttle linkage... all the screws...then fight with it.
  • Dave, The transmission floor cover is the same size from 48-54. The seam may be filled in with tar or other material but just keep digging. It takes up a good part of the front floor section. It would also be helpful if you could remove the heater/blower box as well. If you look under the hood in the engine compartment, you will see the seam near where the gas pedal linkage comes out and would certainly see the seams if you put the car up on jack stands and get underneath. The clutch on a 46-7 uses a smaller floorpan than the stepdowns. Good luck.

There is also a row of 7/16 head bolts along the top under the upper panel. If never removed, you will have to clean the heads of every bolt along each side. You then have to pry the panel where it's along the seat floor frame. Takr your time and don't bend it to remove. Walt.
